Changing Played Ball on Hole

Today I played my first nine holes on a real course. I felt surprisingly good on my short-mid range game. Can a player tee off with one ball and switch it out on later shots? I teed off with cheaper balls because I didn't mind losing them as much, but I got a much better feel on my pitching wedge shots and 9 iron shots using a Callaway HX-Hot that I found. Was this within the rules? Also, how is it possible to get a better feel with one ball over another? I was teeing off with a Top Flight XL-Straight.

Sorry for a multi question post, I am a newcomer with golf fever.
