Ping and Scotty Cameron (Titliest)would have to spend tons of money licensing the use of a groove like that and they're not gonna do it...it would be ahem 'beneath them'.
Solheim (who I admire very much by the way)can say anything he wants about how he thinks grooves are pointless on a putter face; the fact is that actual physical tests have proved that grooves do allow the ball to roll from impact quicker than a smooth face. It maybe just a little bit, but it's something. |
All research does show that they roll the ball sooner. Solheim and Titliest admit that. However, it is proven to do so in a very controlled enviroment and more importantly, they do so with a de-lofted face. If the tests were done with a Ping putter with a de-lofted face the resuslts would be the same. I assure you, if Ping thought that it would work they would design something that would work. They would not have to pay licenseing fees becuase they have a huge R&D that would design something that would work just as good.
Again the tests that prove them to do so are done in a really controlled that you would never face on the course. Solheim said that the tests that are done to prove the grooves effective would be thrown off as easily as a blade of grass laying in the wrong direction. If the tests were done in real world settings with a putter that has the same loft, ie 4 degrees. The grooves would not do what promised.
I would say having a putter that is fit for you is much much more important that face grooves. Click on the link in my signature, the Edel custom and read about that putter. I am not at liberty so say what company is going to use his system, but when they do; every one in the golfing world is going to hear about it.
