World Golf Hall Of Famer Gary Player Commits To Play In His Sixth Toshiba Classic, Ma

Newport Beach, CA, February 25, 2008 - Gary Player, the most traveled athlete in the history of sports, will travel to Newport Beach Country Club for the first time in five years to compete in his sixth Toshiba Classic.

Player, the 12th World Golf Hall of Famer (inducted in 1974) to be included in one of the Toshiba Classic’s most competitive fields ever, will try to chase down defending Toshiba Classic champion Jay Haas and the $247,500 winner’s check at the $1.7 million Toshiba Classic, televised by Golf Channel from the par-71, 6,598-yard Newport Beach Country Club.

“I try and support tournaments in my career. I’ll go to a tournament, then I might not go back there for another year,” said Player from Maui, where he was competing in the Wendy’s Champions SKINS GAME. “Then I’ll go to another tournament. I try and support as many as I can living as far away as I do.

“I love Toshiba. I love the event there. It’s a wonderful little golf course in the most beautiful part of United States. I think California is still overall, the most beautiful state. It reminds me a lot of South Africa where I live.”

Player, 72, is regarded as a worldwide champion of fitness as well as being a charismatic champion of 24 PGA TOUR, 19 Champions Tour events and 122 other victories across the globe. In fact, no professional athlete has traveled more in their job than Player – over 14 million miles.
