Malaysian on course to finally make the cut in third attempt

SHAH ALAM: Golfer Danny Chia was not the only Malaysian smiling yesterday.

After two unsuccessful attempts, fellow Malaysian Iain Steel looks set to join Danny in making the cut for the Maybank Malaysian Open.

Steel, who is of Scottish-Malaysian parentage, carded a three-under 69 in the second round at Kota Permai Golf and Country Club yesterday.

Steel had five birdies against two bogeys on his scorecard for the second round to finish with a five-under 139.

Steel had not been successful in his two previous attempts since joining the Asian Tour two years ago.

“Previously, I started well and then I would throw a few bogeys in there and that would slow me down.

“I managed to keep the momentum going this time,” said the 37-year-old, who started with a two-under 70 on Thursday.
