Hutcheon and Besseling setting pace in Morocco

Scotland’s Greig Hutcheon and Holland’s Wil Besseling took a share of the early clubhouse lead on seven under par on the second day of the Banque Populaire Moroccan Classic on the European Challenge Tour.

Aberdeen player Hutcheon, the overnight leader, was unable to make much progress on the greens at El Jadida Sofitel Golf Resort in Morocco, carding two birdies and two bogeys.

He was joined on seven under by Holland’s Wil Besseling who carded a two under par 70 in an eventful round that included an eagle on the tenth hole, as well as four birdies and four bogeys.

Hutcheon said: “I didn’t lose any shots but I didn’t putt anything today. I played reasonably well again but I was trying to force putts into the hole.

“I had some chances today but I was unable to take them, despite playing well. The wind is getting up though and the course is quite tricky today.”

Besseling, who is looking for his second Challenge Tour win of the season following his victory in the II Club Colombia Masters last month, said he was happy to be in challenging at the top of the leaderboard once again.

He said: “I was five under after 10 holes but unfortunately I made some bogeys and some mistakes. But I played well today and I’m happy for a tie of the lead.

“The win in Colombia has given me confidence and it is good to be in contention again.”
