It doesnst always work that way, there was something on the tv a while back stating that quite a few balls, straight from the packet dont have a correct centre of gravity, causing the ball to roll to one side on flat straight putts.

I do feel however that this would be a problem that the cheaper end golf balls suffer from more than the premium end.
