MARTIN LAIRD used to come to Loch Lomond as a kid to stare goggle-eyed as his golfing heroes battled it out for the Scottish Open title.
Yesterday he was inside the ropes for the first time and put himself in position to have a crack at taking the trophy back across the Atlantic with him.
The Arizona-based Scot, playing his first European Tour event as a professional on home soil, thrilled the locals with a fabulous 65 that placed him just one shot behind Australian leader Richard Green on a day when the scores were low and the excitement high.
