With a total purse of US$1.8 million, the MasterCard Championship at Big Island's Hualalai Resort Golf Club attracts a field of leading golfers to one of the first PGA events of the calendar year.

Designed by golf legend, Jack Nicklaus, the course is a stunning ribbon of green alongside the island's jagged volcanic coastline and the tournament is always a popular stop on the tour.

Winner from last year.

KAUPULEHU-KONA, Hawaii (AP) -- Hale Irwin accomplished more in three rounds in his beloved Hawaii than he had in the previous 15 months.

Coming off his first winless season in 12 years, the 61-year-old Irwin won the Champions Tour's season-opening MasterCard Championship at Hualalai on Sunday, beating Jim Thorpe and Tom Kite by five strokes for his tour-record 45th victory.

Doyle Leads at MasterCard

Allen Doyle birdied the final two holes for a 6-under 66 and a one-stroke lead over Fred Funk on Saturday after the second round of the MasterCard Championship.

The 59-year-old Doyle holed a bending 26-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to finish at 15-under 129 in the winners-only tournament, the first of 29 Champions Tour events of the year.

Funk, coming off a 10th-place tie last week in the PGA Tour's Sony Open, had a 63 to put himself in contention.

First-round leader Tom Purtzer (69) and Jim Thorpe (68) were third at 13 under.

1/18 Bogey-free round lifts Purtzer into MasterCard Championship lead

Tom Purtzer got off to a lot better start than he expected after a long offseason.

Purtzer shot a bogey-free 10-under 62 on Friday to take the first-round lead in the Champions Tour's season-opening MasterCard Championship.

"It helped my confidence," Purtzer said. "When you take three months off, you're not really sure how things are going to go. A round like today does a lot."

Jim Thorpe, who tied for second last year and is coming off a victory at the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship, was a stroke back along with playing partner Allen Doyle.

Purtzer was strong off the tees, hit all 18 greens in regulation and putted just 28 times. His 62 was a stroke shy of the course record set by Loren Roberts when he won in 2006. It was Purtzer's 13th under-par round at Hualalai, where he finished fifth in his 2004 debut and ninth the following year.

Funk shoots 65 to win at Hualalai

aupulehu-Kona, HI (Sports Network) - Fred Funk would like to win $2 million on two different tours this season.

He's off to a good start.

After collecting nearly $200,000 in two PGA Tour starts, Funk opened the Champions Tour season with a win by shooting a seven-under 65 on Sunday to beat Allen Doyle at the MasterCard Championship.

Funk collected $300,000 for the victory, his third in three seasons on the 50- and-over circuit. He finished at 21-under 195, bolstered by a 63 on Saturday at Hualalai.

Doyle, the 11-time Champions Tour winner with the homespun swing, did little wrong Sunday in a head-to-head with Funk that resembled match play down the stretch.

The overnight leader by a shot, Doyle carded a final-round 64 to end two shots back at 19-under 197. Ahead by as many as four on Sunday, he ended his round with five consecutive pars, most of them scrambling.

Funk birdied the last two holes for the win, making a 20-foot chip from the fringe at the 17th to move ahead, then rolling in an eight-foot birdie putt at the 18th for good measure.
