Where: Santa Clarita.

Course: Valencia Country Club (6,959 yards, par 72).

Purse: $1.6 million.

Winner's share: $240,000.

TV: Golf Channel (Friday, 3:30-5:30 p.m., 9:30-11:30 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 3:30-6 p.m., 10 p.m.-12:30 a.m.).

Last year: Tom Purtzer won the event for the second time in five seasons, beating Loren Roberts with a 17-foot birdie on the fourth hole of a playoff.

Notes: Gil Morgan won in 1996, 1997 and 2004. He also won the PGA Tour's Los Angeles event in 1978 and 1983. . . . Tom Kite won the 2006 tournament. . . . Former 49ers quarterback John Brodie won the 1991 event for his lone tour title.

Nick Price birdied the final hole for a 6-under 66 and a one-stroke lead over defending champion Tom Purtzer on Friday after the first round of the Champions Tour's AT&T Champions Classic.

Price, winless in 17 career starts since joining the 50-and-over tour last year, topped a leaderboard for the first time 54 Champions Tour rounds. He won 18 times on the PGA Tour, including three major victories.

"The last 2 1/2 years has been awful playing-wise," said Price, whose best finish was a tie for third last year. "People said I wasn't interested, but I was trying. My confidence was probably at an all time low midway through last year."

Price finished fifth in his last event, The ACE Group Classic, missing a 10-foot putt that would have gotten him into a playoff.

"I've played well as of late," Price said. "When you post one or two good scores hopefully that's a good sign."

He had seven birdies and a bogey in windy conditions.

"I did my damage with the wind at my back," Price said. "When the wind was in my face, I just tried to hang on."

Purtzer, a playoff winner last year over Loren Roberts, had three birdies and an eagle for the only bogey-free round of the day. He also won the 2003 tournament.

"The key for the next two days is to hit the ball solid," Purtzer said. "I'm not feeling real comfortable over the ball like I was last year."

Dana Quigley opened with a 68, Roberts and Graham Marsh shot 69s, and Fred Funk, Jerry Pate, Jeff Sluman, Vicente Fernandez, Andy Bean, Brad Bryant, Dave Stockton and Joe Ozaki had 70s. Gil Morgan, the 1996, 1997 and 2004 winner, shot a 73.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) — Brad Bryant shot a 5-under 67 on Saturday to take a two-stroke lead in the AT&T Champions Classic, while first-round leader Nick Price's 77 left him six strokes back entering the final day.

Bryant, the 2007 U.S. Senior Open champion, had a 7-under 137 total on the Valencia Country Club course. He had an eagle, five birdies and two bogeys in the second round, and nearly had a second eagle on the 18th when his 66-yard wedge shot spun back by the hole, leaving just 3 feet for birdie.

Price, winless in 17 career starts since joining the 50-and-over tour last year, had a double bogey, four bogeys and one birdie Saturday after opening with a 66 on Friday. He won 18 times on the PGA Tour, including three major victories.

Bryant made a 37-foot eagle putt on the par-5 15th and was 5 under on the four par 5s in the second round after playing them in 1 under on Friday.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) -- Zimbabwe's Denis Watson won the AT&T Champions Classic Sunday for his third Champions Tour title in two seasons, beating Loren Roberts with a birdie on the third hole of a playoff Sunday at Valencia Country Club.

Watson, the 2007 Senior PGA Championship and Boeing Classic winner, birdied the par-5 18th in regulation for a 7-under 65 and a share of the top spot with Roberts (70) and Brad Bryant (72) at 7-under 209. Bryant was eliminated on the second extra hole.

Watson, a three-time winner on the PGA TOUR, set up his winning putt with a 9-iron form 152 yards to 20 inches on the par-4 10th.

"I'd like to watch that shot over and over again," Watson said. "That was so pure. That's as good a shot as I've hit in a long time."

Last year, Tom Purtzer beat Roberts on the fourth hole of a playoff.
