U.S. Open winners paired together at Bank of America Championship

Curtis Strange knows a little something about winning the U.S. Open in a playoff, and even he's impressed with Tiger Woods' victory this year.

"It's mind-boggling what he did," said Strange, who won the event in 1998 at The Country Club in nearby Brookline. "He was able to will his way to victory."

Strange earned his first major victory in the '88 Open by winning an 18-hole playoff against Nick Faldo, then won the tournament again the next year -- he's the last player to win consecutive U.S. Opens -- for his only other major.

Jay Haas enjoys lofty status

ay Haas, who is well on his way to becoming the Tiger Woods of the Champions Tour, will seek his third consecutive victory when he tees it up in this morning’s first round of the 28th Bank of America Championship at Nashawtuc Country Club.

Haas, the defending champ here, won the Senior PGA Championship at Oak Hill in Rochester, N.Y., on May 25, and followed that with a win in the Principal Charity Classic June 1 in Des Moines, Iowa, before the tour took a two-week hiatus. A win here would mark the second time Haas has gone on a run of three straight wins on the Champions Tour.

Haas is one of 78 players competing in the 54-hole, $ 1.65 million dollar event, with $247,500 going to the winner. It is the 25th straight year the tournament has been at Nashawtuc following two years at Marlborough Country Club.

Roberts birdies 18 to take Bank of America lead

The Boss of the Moss was at a loss. Loren Roberts had just three-putted from 30 feet for a double bogey on the ninth hole at the Bank of America Championship on Saturday. His goal for No. 10: Don't let the uncharacteristic shakiness destroy his whole round.

"I came back and birdied 10, so I am really proud of myself," Roberts said after shooting a second-day 66 to take a one-stroke lead heading into the final round. "I guess I got all of the bad ones out on one hole."

Roberts birdied the 18th to move to 10 under, one stroke ahead of Mark McNulty (70), Jeff Sluman (67) and first-round leader Tom Kite (72). Bobby Wadkins (67) was another stroke back at 8 under on the 6,741-yard, par-72 Nashawtuc Country Club course.

Roberts has won seven times in his 3 1/2 years on the Champions Tour but has never played in this tournament, even though he's had some success in the area. He won the 1997 CVS Charity Classic in Sutton, before the PGA Tour dropped the event.

Sluman bests Roberts for Bank of America win

Jeff Sluman fired an eight-under 64 Sunday to jump past Loren Roberts and win the Bank of America Championship.

Sluman ended the event at 17-under-par 199, one shot off the tournament scoring record.

The win for Sluman was his first on the Champions Tour and first since he claimed his sixth and final PGA Tour crown at the 2002 Greater Milwaukee Open.

"I played very well today," said Sluman, who collected $247,500. "Loren put up a heck of a fight and he played terrific, too."
