Nielsen likes defending champion role

Lonnie Nielsen's last few days have been unlike any he's had as a big-time professional golfer.

"This is the first time for me doing this as a defending champion,'' Nielsen said Thursday, the day before he was to tee it up as the reigning champion of the Commerce Bank Championship on the Champions Tour.

Nielsen played on the PGA TOUR full-time from 1978-83 with his best finish a tie for fifth at Quad Cities in 1979. He then became a club pro and was successful on the New York State PGA circuit, winning 32 times from 1984-2003.

Roberts holds first-round lead for second straight year

Loren Roberts made a 45-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to cap a 6-under 65 that gave him a one-stroke lead over two golfers with a special relationship after Friday's opening round of the Commerce Bank Championship.

Hot back nine leaves Roberts up by two at Commerce Bank Championship

Loren Roberts' to-do list for the final round of the Commerce Bank Championship doesn't sound like one of a top golfer with a two-stroke lead.

"My first goal is to hit the fairway on No. 1. Then I'll try to shoot under par on the front nine and see what happens from there," Roberts said Saturday after his 3-under 68 gave him the lead after two rounds in the Champions Tour event.

Roberts has been the leader after both rounds on the 7,082-yard Red Course at Eisenhower Park. It's been the final few holes that have allowed that to happen.

Commerce Bank Championship: Second-Round Notebook

Loren Roberts shoots for his first victory of the 2008 season Sunday and his eighth overall title on the Champions Tour. Thus far this year, Roberts has finished second three times, including a playoff loss to Denis Watson at the AT&T Champions Classic and a runner-up effort to Jeff Sluman last week at the Bank of America Championship near Boston.

Roberts wins for first time this year at Commerce Bank Championship

Loren Roberts led all the way in his first win of the year.

He shot a 3-under 68 on Sunday to cap a one-stroke victory over Nick Price and Lonnie Nielsen in the Commerce Bank Championship.

Roberts had three second-place finishes on the Champions Tour this year, including last week to Jeff Sluman, but his 12-under 201 total gave him his eighth title on the 50-and-over circuit, matching his total from his PGA TOUR career.
