First-round groove is unmatched

Two hundred thirty-six holes is all Dana Quigley played Tuesday through Friday last week back home in Florida. Then for a breather, Quigley played "just" 36 holes on the weekend -- so he would have time to watch golf on TV, of course -- before heading north to take part in this week's 3M Championship.

He brought with him some changes.

When he arrived at TPC Twin Cities for the Champions Tour event, Quigley had ditched his crosshand putting grip and instead went with a standard righthanded interlocking form to go along with his month-old belly putter.

Quigley's record round gives him two-shot lead at 3M Championship

Dana Quigley shot a tournament-record 10-under 62 and leads after the first round of the Champions Tour's 3M Championship on Friday.

Gene Jones shot a season-best 64, and is two shots back. Jeff Sluman birdied four of his last five holes to join R.W. Eaks at 7 under.

"There was no negative stuff that ever creeped in there for 18 holes," said Quigley, who matched his career low score in 11 years on the Champions Tour.

It easily could have.

Eaks wins the 3M Championship

R.W. Eaks was the runaway winner in the Champions Tour 3M Championship on Sunday, posting the lowest score in the tournament's 16-year history.

Eaks shot a 7-under 65 in the final round to finish with a 54-hole total of 193, four shots better than Ed Dougherty's finish in 2000. Gary Hallberg and Bernhard Langer tied for second at 17-under 199 for the tournament.
