Hallberg finds confidence, success on Champions Tour

Don't mention that ugly, dreaded "C" word to Gary Hallberg.

Cut. Hallberg shudders at the sound of it.

Round 1 Notes: U.S. Senior Open Championship

• Fred Funk, making his first appearance on the Champions Tour since the FedEx Kinko's Classic in early May, carded a 5-under 65 today, his best opening round on the Champions Tour in 2008. He's a first-round leader for the third time in his brief career on the Champions Tour. On two previous occasions, Funk posted 65 in the opening round both times and went on to win. After the first round of the 2006 AT&T Championship, Funk led by one stroke over R.W. Eaks, Dan Pohl and Scott Simpson. At the end of the first round of the 2007 Turtle Bay Championship, Funk led by two strokes over five different players.

Funk's 65 moves him to the top at U.S. Senior Open

The only thing that spoiled John Cook's comeback was Fred Funk's finish.

Cook, who lost a big lead on the back nine at the Senior British Open on Sunday, played a practice round with Greg Norman at The Broadmoor's East Course this week to prepare for the U.S. Senior Open and to commiserate over their respective final-round failures across the Atlantic.

Norman couldn't hold on to the 54-hole lead at the British Open two weeks ago.

Funk ruins Cook's comeback with 65

The only thing that spoiled John Cook's comeback was Fred Funk's finish.

Cook, who lost a big lead on the back nine at the Senior British Open on Sunday, played a practice round with Greg Norman at The Broadmoor's East Course this week to prepare for the U.S. Senior Open and to commiserate over their respective final-round failures across the Atlantic.

Norman couldn't hold on to the 54-hole lead at the British Open two weeks ago.

All that pity paid off Thursday when Cook carded a 4-under 66, which was good for the clubhouse lead for most of the day until Funk birdied the 16th and 17th holes to go 6 under before three-putting the final hole and finishing at 5-under 65.

Funk had two birdies and an eagle on the first four holes of a spectacular round that was bogey-free until the 18th hole.

"Obviously, I got off to a ridiculously good start," Funk said. "It was a good day. You can't be displeased with a 65 on this course -- or any course."

Four players were tied for third place at 1 under: Morris Hatalsky, Eduardo Romero, Juan Quiros and Tom Kite.

Funk leads by two at U.S. Senior Open, where black bear joins gallery

The Broadmoor's East Course was quite a bear Friday.

managed to shoot below par, including Fred Funk, whose 1-under 69 gave him the lead at the halfway point of the U.S. Senior Open.

Funk's two-day score of 6-under 134 is two shots ahead of Eduardo Romero (69) and four ahead of Mark McNulty (70), Tom Kite (71) and John Cook (72).

Stealing the show, however, was a black bear that ambled out of the mountains in the morning and crossed the 13th fairway before checking out spectators outside the ropes.

Romero surges into lead at US Senior Open

The Broadmoor's East Course wasn't so unbearable Saturday.

Eduardo Romero of Argentina grabbed the 54-hole lead at the U.S. Senior Open with a 5-under-par 65, conquering not only a course but also a field that one day earlier was bedeviled by perilous pin placements and a curious black bear.

"Fantastic round. I played great today," said Romero, whose three-day total of 9-under 201 is two shots ahead of Fred Funk (69), who relinquished the lead with three bogeys on the back nine, and three ahead of John Cook (66).

Tom Kite (71) is in fourth, eight shots back and the only other golfer under par for the tournament.
