David Toms - Golf Profile

Birthdate: January 4, 1967
Nationality: American
Turned Pro: 1989
Current Tour: PGA

Background:

David Wayne Toms, a native of Louisiana, began his career by winning the Boy’s event at the 1984 Junior World Golf Championships. Prior to joining the PGA tour in 1992, he attended Louisiana State University. Away from the course, Toms has dedicated himself to providing opportunities for at-risk children through The David Toms Foundation – a charity he founded to provide programs to kids that enhance character, self-esteem and provide career opportunities. He is also active in course design work, including a re-design of Palmetto Dunes Club in 1999, the first David Toms signature course at Carter Plantation, Louisiana (2003) and current work with Rees Jones on a new 18-hole course at Redstone for the 2006 Shell Houston Open. 1991: First qualified for TOUR by finishing 24th in Qualifying Tournament.

Professional Career Bio:
As an Amateur, Toms was a First-team All-American at LSU in 1988-89, when he was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Year. Though David Toms has maintained a consistent winning record on the tour, his winning score of 265 (15 under par) in the 2001 PGA Championship set a record as the lowest 72-hole score ever in a major championship. His current best round is a 61 at Round 3, at the Sony Open in Hawaii.
In 2006, his career highlights include a tie for 9th at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, a 2nd place tie at the Ford Championship in Doral (finishing one stroke behind champion Tiger Woods) and a tie for 3rd at the Honda Classic a week later. His finish in the top ten at the FedEx-St.Jude Classic earned him is fifth straight Top 10 in 15 career starts.
