| I thought the idea behind the square drivers was to help more inconsistant players to hit better drives. By making the hitting plane flat, instead of curved, the ball should see less slicing and hooking.
I also agree that the square drivers are a new way to get people back into the golf stores to spend more $$. I'll wait for a couple years before tying the square stuff out.

| Hey,
I tried hitting the SUMO and Hi Bore XL last sunday, and I saw more distance on the HiBore XL than the SUMO.
Im still waiting for Callaway's FT5.
Currently, I have Cleveland Launcher 460 Compo, McGregor NVG2 and a X460 in my bag.
Im still weighing them....before disposing them.

| These drivers will NOT provide significant distance gains over last year's models or todays rounded drivers. The theory behind the square head is that mass is distributed further into the back corners than on a traditional head, this mass placement gives the club greater moment of inertia (moi) on hits on the toe, or heel of the face. This translates into a club that has greater ability to remain square through the hitting area while being less prone to twisting at impact. This is meant to eliminate the hands twisting the club at impact to produce sidespin, this means that the only way to hook or slice would be by changing the swing plane, essentially hitting "across" the ball.
This becomes a drawback for advanced players who have the ability to control sidespin and work the ball to fit the layout of the hole since they can no longer produce the same spin by turning their hands over or holding onto the club through impact.
These drivers will make it easier for mid-high handicappers to find the fairway by effectively eliminating one of the two causes of sidespin. They will produce straighter shots and basically go on the plane you swing the club on.

I won't buy one because I have a new driver (TM r7, the first brand new driver I've bought in 18 years), and besides... I think they are positively hideous. I won't be playing golf long enough in this lifetime to ever wrap my mind around something as obscene as the Nike Sumo.
But I don't really have an opinion... | Ok... I'm eating crow... tasty too. I couldn't hit the wall of a barn from the inside with my R7, so I traded it in on a Callaway FTi. Played 18 holes today and hit 7 of the 10 fairways I used it on. No contest. I was consistently hitting it 270 yards, and in the short grass. It doesn't have the hideous clank of the Sumo 2, but still seems to give one the same advantages.

| WOW Rick!... Congrats on the new driver. I'm resisting trying one out because I'm afraid I'll like it. I finally saw one in the flesh and it wasn't as ugly as I thought it would be.

| [Sarcasm] I don't want to hear about how good they are! I just got my callaway magazine in the mail and it's full of promotional material about the FT-i... Repeat after me: Resist the urge - Resist the urge[/Sarcasm]
Honestly - They look a lot cooler once you see them a few more times but I think the wife would be pretty mad about me trading in my FT-3 for the FT-i when I haven't even played the FT-3 for a whole season.. (maybe they'll be on sale next christmas?)

My Callaway X460 rings so loudly every time I hit it that kids at a nearby school think it's time to change classes.

| I already put my review on here on these very drivers...but I'll express my opinion anyway.. Personally, someone like me, who likes to shape their shots, has no need for these clubs. With that said, the high MOI, would benefit someone who can't do anything but shape his shots, and sprays balls everywhere. The Sumo 2..well, I didn't like it..I got about as much consistancy as a baseball bat..the square face kept intimidating me..I felt like I was going to screw it up..The FT-i..much better..I liked this club! It offered good distance, with a nice feel. The looks weren't that bad..as only the bottom was 3 colored.
I guess the square clubs have their place..and I don't think it's going anywhere..but, we'll see. Personally I think the bandaid approach, is a bad idea, and puts a blinder over the bad parts of your game, thus not letting you improve. |
