Nike have a new SUMO driver coming out, it does look a bit odd, but companies wouldnt make these if they were going backwards with technology.

Square Drivers

Yeah I saw these drivers on TV and they said that they create more inertia because of the increased mass. You can kind of think of inertia as momentum, so this means that the club head will not move faster, but it will strike the ball "heavier" than a standard driver head, causing a greater force (because of the increased mass) and obviously will cause the ball to go farther.
I don't think that air resistance is very significant when you're talking about something as small as the face of a club head. Plus the faces aren't usually completely flat.
As long as they aren't heavier, I can't see how these square drivers will NOT cause greater distance.

Nike Sumo

I hit a demo since I'm about a half mile from the Nike head quarters. Nice feeling club very very strange at address but hit well. I'm curious about the new Callaway.

I was at an Edwin Watts store last night. I asked the guys what they thought about the square drivers and none of them wanted to carry them. (They didn't have them yet, but didn't want to dedicate valuable floor space to them) To a man, they all felt they would be a passing fad. I'm not so sure...

Personally, I don't like the look of them and would hate to hit one and discover I hit it well. I'm so old fashioned that I'm having enough trouble getting used to a 460 cc driver, Callaway irons with an offset and cavity back... A square driver would probably ruin my reputation altogether.

All the pros that I have spoken to regarding this told me that they did reduce the amount of side spin created, however, if you do hit one out right, it wont be a slice it will look more like a block out right.

IMO, the only real reason for it is to sell more stuff to players who already have more than they can ever use.

The club ho types will go out and buy them just because there are there. The golfers who are eternally trying to buy a lower handicap (rather than actually learn to play the game) will buy them because somebody "guarantees" that you will shoot lower scores if you buy their superclub.

I won't buy one because I have a new driver (TM r7, the first brand new driver I've bought in 18 years), and besides... I think they are positively hideous. I won't be playing golf long enough in this lifetime to ever wrap my mind around something as obscene as the Nike Sumo.

But I don't really have an opinion...

I've played the FT-i and was

Extremely impressed. Does that mean I'm gonna buy one? I really don't know yet. The club is undoubtedly the most forgiving driver that I've ever played. I truly tried to cut a few as well as snap hook a few and the side spin was markedly limited..........but that's also a problem. Shaping a shot with these drivers is VERY difficult and that is why you won't see a bunch of pros playing them. I simply could not fade or draw the ball without exaggerating my swing....not a good idea. Now unless you are a pro or serious amateur, that's not a really big deal. I'll take straight down the pipe all day long!!

Drop one in the fairway for me while you're out there. You said it all...

Fortunately, I've been hitting my X460 Tour really well and finding I can make a smooth swing with it and hit it where I want with good distance. It sounds like the damned school bell has rung every time I hit it, but it feels really good.

I won't be in the market for a square club if this X460 keeps performing as advertised.
