| Buy Name Brand or Build at Discount? after being a hack for 15 years I finally decided to take golf seriously, which means upgrading from my 15+ year old set of hand-me-down clubs to a fitted set. I have read some pretty good reviews on building component clubs at discount such as Golfsmith's Snake Eyes, etc.But my brother says I'm crazy to consider this option because they are not name brand. I think he just wants to feel good about spending the $ on a new set of Pings. So here is the question I pose to the readers of the Golf Forum (especially those who have done both), Should I "invest" the $ on a set of Pings, Callaway, etc. or build a set from components that I have selected according to my swing style and save the extra money while having the bragging rights of building them myself, and will those clubs be quality clubs? Thanks |

| Just a word or two Nynole, the guy that does my fitting for me just bought and put together two sets of Snake Eyes, for himself and his wife. He's used top of the line shafts and its still cheaper according to him. Granted he's got expertise at putting clubs together, but he also knows clubs inside and out. He absolutely swears by Snake Eyes over any "In this World" priced clubs. The only draw back I could possibly see is who do you take them to if you botch the job. If I had the smarts, equipment and expertise I'd give it a go. Just my opinion

Good quality components such as Wishon, KZG, NAKS etc are fine club heads. Stay away from the low priced heads, JUNK.......
There is nothing wrong with having a set of irons that are non OEM.
I for one have played Wishon 550C's for two seasons and trust me there is nothing cheap about these irons.
However, being a new comer to club building you might want to think this over. There is more to building clubs than cutting the shafts, putting the epoxy on and assembling them. Then gripping them. You need to know what you are doing. After all you have just invested some coin in the heads, shafts, grips etc.
What you might want to think about is this. Locate a Certified Club Builder in your area. Go talk to him and tell him what you want built. Ask for a firm price, and then go from there. In reality a well built set of Snake Eyes might end up costing you almost the same amount as a set of OEM irons. However they will be custom fit to your swing.
You should be fit, have your swing speed checked, grip size checked, all by the builder. This takes time and that costs you money.
So get a price from a builder, then price your OEM irons and compare.
Another option, buy good quality used irons. I just picked up a like new set of Cobra Forged CB's, same irons being played by some of the COBRA STAFF PLAYERS. I paid $500 Canadian for these irons and I bet the 3-7 iron have never been hit. A $1100 set of irons, less than a year old, barely used for less than half price. Now that is the way to buy clubs! |

I LOVE my Snake Eyes irons and I wouldn't trade them for all the Mizuno's, or Titleists, or Callaways, or any other irons in the world!
I built them myself, (been doing it that way for a long time), to my specs, I do all my own lofts, all my own lies and anything else I think I might need. They hit like BUTTAH! and blow the doors off any OEM's that I've tried. AND, the whole shebang, heads, shafts, ferrules and grips cost me about $450 including the wedges! Can't beat that with a stick.
Components are not junk.
Golfsmith, KZG and Golfworks (Maltby) are some of the best clubs no one has ever heard of. Save your money, go with components and build a truly custom set of clubs. You will not regret it!
