New Driver...

Right, i am a 9 handicap but should be lower i just dont get the time anymore!

I currently use a Callaway Great Big bertha 2 driver 9* with firm shaft, my course is a links course right on the seafront at the south of England (which is where the problem is) I hit the ball VERY high! An average drive is just under the 300 yard mark (probably 275 - 290) which is fine but the ball goes so high and lands with no run! Where i play a very windy course the majority of the time i would rather a lower fizzing ball flight for more control!

I know its to do with my swing, but im due an upgrade driver also, what do you all recommend?

Would prefer to stay with Callaway, maybe someting in the FT range? with a better shaft than standard...

Opinions please guys!?

You may just have the wrong kickpoint in your club.. a low kick, would make the ball go higher. It could also be ball position..maybe your a little to far forward? Or the flex.. is the firm to whippy? The FTs are good clubs, just get them fitted for you, before you leave, and don't be afraid to pay a little extra, for a better shaft. It really all comes down to what you like, and what your launch numbers are.

I have tried moving the ball back a bit but i tend to block it out right! Where i dont get through it as much as that little extra bit of turn would allow me, if it was further forward.

Havnt got a clue about the kickpoint on my shaft, it is standard callaway firm flex??

I like the idea of the FT-i dirvers being so straight but ive been told they lack distance compared to others??

I have just bought this off ebay! Bit of a bargain by the looks of it (£150) seen as they have not been out long!

My Pro friend said not to worry about the 10.5 loft as the shaft will help me keep it alot lower!

Good find! Ft5s are good clubs..hope it works for you!You really should have gotten fitted for it though.. I have to comment on the Ft-i..It is a myth that they are shorter. I found it be every bit as ht, as any other driver. Yes, they like to go straight, but are still workable. The only reason I haven't picked one up is because they're still $500!

About you launching high..have you tried just teeing it lower? What happens when you do?

I'm new to club/swing fitting, but I went through the whole process with my mew clubs. I was hitting the driver with the stock shaft so straight my fitter didn't think I need to upgrade it at all. But this is off topic. I'm wondering what would prevent you from taking your new purchase to somewhere that has club fitting and checking how appropriate it is for you. I don't see any reason they couldn't find the best shaft for you and that club head? It might make a good driver a perfect fit for you. Or is there something I don't know about club/shaft construction and modification?

Well I'm obviously no expert, but I'd wholeheartedly recommend the Cleveland HiBore XL. I tried a lot of other drivers before settling on this one, and it wasn't even close. I hit it better, farther, straighter than any other driver I tried. Callaway's (Big Bertha's and Fusions), Taylor Made's (Burner), MacGregor (whatever their new one is), the Ping G5 and Raptures, didn't matter, the Cleveland blew them all away for me--even over the HiBore XL Tour driver.

The only negative thing I've ever read on this driver is the "scalloped" looks is apparently disconcerting to traditional golfers. Since it's the only type of driver I've ever looked down on, it just looks normal to me so it didn't even factor. I swear to god, that thing is sex on a stick.

Hi-Bore? To me that sounds like its gonna help to go "high" ? Or am i wrong?

Well anyway, i took my new driver out on Friday evening, used it about 10 times... I blocked the 1st and 2nd out right but then after getting used to the stiffness started hitting them straight down the middle with a much lower flight than usual (still higher than the 3 people i play with) but alot better for me. I also knocked it through the back of our 1st green (290 yards) into the wind which is promising, as it usually balloons and i come up just short!

Well worth £150!!!
