Clarke hoping to 'Enjoy Jakarta' on Indonesian debut

A rejuvenated Darren Clarke will prove once again that his desire for competitive golf is as strong as ever when he makes his debut in this week’s Enjoy Jakarta Astro Indonesia Open at the Cengkareng Golf Club in Jakarta.

The 39 year old Northern Irishman has rediscovered his appetite for the game after his well documented troubles off the course in 2006 and a poor year on it in 2007 and, with the bit between his teeth, is ready to add the co-sanctioned tournament with the Asian Tour to his ever-growing travelogue.

“It was a long time ago that I was this enthusiastic,” he admitted. “I’ve always been keen but now I am working harder than I have ever worked and spending more time on my game than I have ever done.”

Pagunsan, Miñoza join Indonesia Open

MANILA, Philippines -- Filipino golf stars Juvic Pagunsan and Frankie Miñoza open their campaign in the 2008 Asian Tour this week in the $1.2 million Enjoy Jakarta Astro Indonesian Open set Feb. 14 to 17 at the Cengkareng Golf Club in Jakarta.

Also competing in the second leg of this year’s Tour are Artemio Murakami, Gerald Rosales, Tony Lascuña and Angelo Que, with Jerome Delariarte the lone Filipino on the reserve list.

Pagunsan hopes to ride the momentum of his recent win in the rich The Country Club Invitational, but the spotlight will be on Miñoza, who came close to winning the tournament last year.

Strong Indian challenge at Indonesia Open golf

Jakarta, Feb 12 : Former Asian No.1 Jeev Milkha Singh will lead a strong Indian challenge at the Enjoy Jakarta Astro Indonesia Open golf tournament, starting here Thursday.

India's newest golfing star Shiv Shankar Prasad Chowrasia, who won the EMAAR-MGF Indian Masters Sunday, has decided to skip the event, but still the presence of top Indian golfers like Arjun Atwal, Jyoti Randhawa, Gaurav Ghei, Shiv Kapur, Rahil Gangjee and Amandeep Johl Singh besides Jeev will give the $1.2 million event at the Cengkareng Golf Club a strong Indian falvour.

Asian Tour No.1 Liang Wen-chong of China will play his season's first tournament.

Fresh from a glorious 2007 season where he won the prestigious Asian Tour's Order of Merit crown with one victory and eight top-10s, Liang will be hoping to resume form where he left off last season.

The Enjoy Jakarta Astro Indonesia Open is the second leg of the Asian Tour's 2008 Schedule. Finland's Mikko Ilonen is back to defend the title that he won 12 months ago.

The Indonesia event, staged at Cengkareng Golf Club, is sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour and will see Liang and Asia's best taking on a stellar field, which includes European Ryder Cup stars Paul McGinley and Darren Clarke.

Clarke gets an ace, but Aguilar controls pace at the Indonesian Open

JAKARTA, Indonesia (PA) -- Felipe Aguilar of Chile will go into the weekend of the Enjoy Jakarta Astro Indonesian Open with a two-stroke lead after producing an 8-under-par 62 in the second round at the Cengkareng Golf Club on Friday. The $1.2 million tournament is co-sanctioned by the European Tour and the Asian Tour.

Aguilar found his iron play in fine fettle with some superb shots around the pin and his putting was equally sharp as he racked up eight birdies in a bogey-free round.

Aguilar leads South African James Kamte and Thailand's Prom Meesawat by two shots as he bids for his first-ever victory on the European Tour.

"I feel ready to win," he said. "I have the will and I have the game -- I just need to wait for the right week and hopefully it is this one.

"I would take 8 under every day -- two more of those and I will have a chance. But at the same time, I know there is still a long way to go," he added. "I have led tournaments by two or three shots before at the halfway stage and lost by five or six shots, so there is a long way to go."

Having teed off in the morning, Aguilar took the lead relatively early in the day and those that teed off in the afternoon failed to really threaten his position.

Joost Luiten of the Netherlands and Australian David Bransdon, who had finished Thursday with a share of the lead after carding 64s, endured disappointing rounds in relation to their opening-day performances.

Luiten carded a 1-under 69 to fall six shots behind Aguilar with 7 under overall, while Bransdon fared even worse, dropping way down the leaderboard after carding a disastrous 4-over-par 74.

Three shots behind Aguilar are Austrian Martin Wiegele and Thailand's Prayad Marksaeng while India's Jeev Milkha Singh is a further stroke behind on 9 under.

Darren Clarke's early joy of carding a superb hole-in-one on the par-3 fourth did not continue into the rest of the round as he finished with a 3-under 67 and is 5 under overall.

The Northern Irishman followed up his ace with birdies on the sixth and seventh but was unable to keep that run going on the back nine, dropping one shot and making par on the rest.

"It would be nice to put a low (score) in tomorrow," said Clarke. "If I can get down to 23 or 24 putts then I could move up the leaderboard."

Paul McGinley, who like Clarke finished the opening round on 2 under, finished 1 under for the day and trails Aguilar by 10 strokes.

Bransdon, Luiten take lead at RI Open first round

Australia's David Bransdon and Joost Luiten of the Netherlands managed to weather a rain-drenched course and windy conditions at the Cengkareng Golf Club in Tangerang to share the lead in the first round of Enjoy Jakarta Astro Indonesia Open on Thursday.

Both men made a solid start by firing six-under 64s to take a one-stroke lead in the US$1.2 million tournament.

Trailing with five-under 65s, included a pack of seven golfers -- Asian Tour No. 1 Liang Wen-chong of China, Jeev Milkha Singh of India and Prayad Marksaeng of Thailand.

Heavy downpours in the afternoon brought the co-sanctioned event between the Asian Tour and European Tour to a halt, with a total of 42 players who did not complete their rounds.

Two-shot swing on final hole gives Aguilar victory in Indonesian Open

Felipe Aguilar admitted his maiden European Tour victory at the Enjoy Jakarta Astro Indonesia Open on Sunday will have "life-changing" implications on the rest of his career. The $1.2 million event was co-sanctioned by the European Tour and the Asian Tour.

The 33-year-old Chilean is no stranger to success in his homeland, having won more than 30 events there, but had struggled to match that form elsewhere in the world.

Aguilar endured an unsuccessful rookie season on the European Tour in 2006 that culminated in him being unable to keep his card. But he enjoyed a superb season on the second-tier European Challenge Tour last year, winning twice, to regain his place on the circuit.

A tie for 81st at the Indian Masters last week -- his first European Tour tournament of year -- did little to suggest that success was forthcoming.
