Bjorn and Jimenez to resume Classic rivalry

Denmark’s Thomas Björn and Spaniard Miguel Angel Jiménez have confirmed their participation in this year’s Johnnie Walker Classic, which takes place at the DLF Golf & Country Club in Gurgaon, New Delhi, from February 28 to March 2.

The presence of the European duo consolidates a strong line up that already features Australia’s Adam Scott and Fiji’s Vijay Singh from the top 11 on the Official World Golf Ranking, as well as England’s Ian Poulter and Colin Montgomerie of Scotland.

On the home front, India’s Number One golfer, Jeev Milkha Singh, will spearhead the local challenge when the Johnnie Walker Classic makes its debut in India.

"Johnnie Walker is delighted to welcome back both Thomas Björn and Miguel Angel Jiménez to the tournament as they produced one of the most tantalizing finishes in the 18 year history of the Johnnie Walker Classic in 2004,” commented Cristina Diezhandino, Acting Global Brand Director for Johnnie Walker.

Jiménez posted a four under par 68 at Bangkok’s Alpine Golf & Sports Club for a four day total of 17 under par 271, to snatch the title from Björn, whose chances dipped dramatically on the back nine en route to a 71.

Indians look to break Asian jinx at Jhonnie Walker Classic

Gurgaon (PTI): In a tournament that has never produced an Asian winner since its inaugration in 1990, Indians would be banking on home advantage to break the jinx at the USD 2.5 million Johnnie Walker Classic that tees off at the picturesque DLF Golf and Country Club here tomorrow.

The task is, however, easier said than done when one looks at the formidable field which comprises big shots like English Ryder Cup star Ian Poulter, eight-time European number one Scot Colin Montgomerie, last year's Asian Tour Order of Merit champion Liang Wen-chong of China and former world number one Fijian Vijay Singh.

But the Indian line-up is no less stellar with Jyoti Randhawa, who lives just five minutes from the DLF Course, Jeev Milkha Singh, Gaurav Ghei, Indian Masters champion S S P Chowrasia, Shiv Kapur and Arjun Atwal spearheading the challenge.

Jeev relishing tough challenge at Johnnie Walker

Gurgaon (PTI): Fresh from a week-long break after the agonising runner-up finish at the Indonesia Open, ace Indian golfer Jeev Milkha Singh on wednesday said the near-miss has made him stronger for the tough field that awaits him at the Jhonnie Walker Classic that tees off at the DLF Golf and Country Club here on Thursday.

Jeev failed to force a play-off against eventual champion Felipe Aguilar despite leading for a major part of the final round in Jakarta.

However, the performance elevated him to second position on the UBS Asian Tour Order of Merit and helped him climb in the official world golf rankings from 92 to 86.

"I'm playing well and pretty excited about playing at DLF this week. It's going to be an interesting week because the Johnnie Walker Classic has always been one of the biggest events in Asia and there's also a lot of depth in the field," said Jeev.

The 2006 UBS Asian Tour Order of Merit winner said the course was playing well and is in good condition.

Speechless Khan leads Johnnie Walker Classic

GURGAON, India, Feb 28, 2008 (AFP) — Indian journeyman Shamim Khan was left speechless on Thursday after carding five-under-par 67 to share the first-round lead at the elite Johnnie Walker Classic.

Khan, with a rock-bottom world ranking of 1,377, outshone a glittering field to set the pace alongside Argentina's Daniel Vancsik in the 2.5-million-dollar showpiece.

"I'm really happy that in a star-studded field, I'm at the top of the leaderboard," said Khan, 29. "I can't explain it in words."

World number five Adam Scott and India's Jeev Milkha Singh suffered late lapses to join a group one shot back on four-under-par 68, while triple major winner Vijay Singh was three off the lead on 70.

Adam Scott Trails Khan, Vancsik at Johnnie Walker Classic Golf

Feb. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Adam Scott, the world No. 5, dropped out of the first-round lead at golf's Johnnie Walker Classic today after his tee shot at the 16th hole landed in water, an error that cost the 2005 champion a double bogey.

``I don't think that it really spoilt the round,'' the 27- year-old Australian told reporters at the DLF Golf and Country Club in New Delhi. ``I was very pleased with everything.''

The highest-ranked player in the field made partial amends with a birdie, par finish for a 4-under round of 68 to trail leaders Shamim Khan of India and Daniel Vancsik of Argentina by a shot.

Scott is seeking to join Tiger Woods and Ernie Els as a two-time winner of the tournament, which has been a fixture on the Asian leg of the tour since 1992. Over the years the event, which is co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour, has been played in countries including Australia, Thailand and China.

This is its first visit to India, which this month became the 37th country to be visited by the European Tour when the inaugural Indian Masters was added to the calendar. The circuit plans to expand in Asia and next month visits South Korea for the first time. The tour will make 10 stops in Asia this season.

Montgomerie makes early exit and faces battle to reach Augusta

Colin Montgomerie's hopes of qualifying for next month's Masters were dealt a major setback in New Delhi yesterday, when the 44-year-old Scot missed the cut in the Johnnie Walker Classic.

Montgomerie, who needs to move into the world's top 50 in the first week of April to qualify for Augusta, added a four-over 76 to his opening 74 to finish in the last dozen at the DLF club. Last week's performance at the World Match Play Championship, where he moved through a couple of rounds and tied for ninth, had lifted the Scot to No54 but that will deteriorate when the new ratings are issued on Monday.

Ghei disqualified from classic

Gaurav Ghei's early charge up the leaderboard at the Johnnie Walker Classic on Saturday came to a shuddering halt when the Indian was disqualified for signing for a wrong score.

The 39-year-old appeared to have climbed into contention after shooting a seven-under-par 65 in the third round, but his delight turned to despondency when it was revealed he had signed for a wrong score after Friday's second round, failing to add two penalty strokes for causing his ball to move as he was addressing it for a shot at the par-five 18th.

European Tour chief referee John Paramor explained: "Unfortunately, nobody around the immediate area saw this movement of the ball - but clearly on reviewing the television pictures, this has happened. The ball has moved - albeit a very, very small distance."

He added: "If it had been noted before he played his next stroke, he could have corrected the error and been penalised one stroke. But he failed to replace it, and that would have meant a further penalty.

Unheralded Taichiro Kiyota surges into third round lead in Johnnie Walker Classic

GURGAON, India — Unheralded Japanese golfer Taichiro Kiyota shot a 5-under-par 67 to take the lead Saturday in the third round of the Johnnie Walker Classic.

Kiyota, who eagled the par-5 sixth, had a 14-under-par, 202 total heading into the final round. He's one stroke ahead of New Zealand's Mark Brown (64) and India's Jyoti Randhawa (68), playing on his home course.

"This is unbelievable. I'm obviously very excited to be on top of the leaderboard. It's the first time for me to be in such a position," said the 27-year-old Kiyota, who hasn't won in five years as a pro. "I may not be able to sleep well tonight."

Vijay Singh shot a 69 and is tied for 10th overall in the tournament jointly sanctioned by the European and Asian Tours.

Brown, who at one point in his career gave up golf and took up an office job for three years, won on the Asian Tour last week.

Tough final day for golfers at the Johnnie Walker Classic

GURGAON, March 2: The final day of the Johnnie Walker Classic 2008 turned out to be a tough outing for the golfers at the DLF Golf and Country Club on Sunday. Golfers teeing off in the early morning had a hot tough day as nobody was able to put up any decent score. Most of the golfers ended the morning's play on over-par.

Defending champion Anton Haig from South Africa started the day with world number five Adam Scott, but had a horrifying final round with almost every drive going to the woods and bushes in the front nine.
