Interview With Mark Johnson

DAVE SENKO: Great start, 7‑under, 64. Maybe just talk a little about your day, and then we'll get your seven birdies and no bogeys and some questions.

MARK JOHNSON: It was a very good start. You know, I started out on the back side. No. 10 was my opening hole. Didn't hit a very good drive. Kind of shoved it and hit it in the right bunker off the tee. It was up towards the lip somewhat.

It was either a 5‑iron or rescue 4‑iron and tried to hit it off to the right a little bit and hook it in. I caught it mid‑spin, and it caught the lip and went over towards the left bunker up towards the green. I had like 58 yards to the hole. I happened to knock it in, so that was a really nice little gift, you know. Got me going a little bit.

Then, from there, we played pretty solid all day. Then I birdied 10 and then I birdied 13, 14, and 15. I had an opportunity on 18. I hit a good drive down the middle of the fairway, and I hit a rescue 2‑iron in there and just didn't quite catch it. Came up a little short, and hit my chip about 12 feet by the hole and just missed it.

But, you know, I birdied 1 and 2. I hit a rescue 3‑iron off of 1 and hit it absolutely perfect. I had like 100 and ‑‑ I think I had 100 yards right on the number, and I hit it to about four and a half feet and knocked that in.

DAVE SENKO: What did you hit for your second?

Interview With Jay Haas

DAVE SENKO: Jay, another good round here at Newport Beach Country Club: 6‑under, 65. Just talk about your day. Looks like seven birdies and one bogey.

JAY HAAS: It was good. A lot of what I did last year. I drove the ball well today. Did a lot of good iron shots and I took advantage of my opportunities out there. Left a few out there, but I made a couple nice putts.

I just enjoy playing this golf course. Most of the holes really appeal to my eye. When I step up to the tee to make a shot, I can see my tee shot taking off. I did, I hit a lot of fairways today. I gave myself opportunities.

The course is really playing fast. The ball is rolling a long way. But, you know, this course, the protection of it is pinning, where they cut the holes. There are a few over bunkers and tough to get to and things like that. But, you, it's hard to be disappointed with a 65.

DAVE SENKO: Birdies, start at No. 2.

JAY HAAS: For 2, I made about a 20‑foot putt there. Hit a sand wedge.

3, I went to the green and came up just short and chipped to about two feet; made that.

5, I hit a 7‑iron to about four feet.

12, hit a sand wedge to about 16, 17 feet. Is that what it said on ShotLink?

DAVE SENKO: Yeah.
