Player, the 12th World Golf Hall of Famer (inducted in 1974) to be included in one of the Toshiba Classic’s most competitive fields ever, will try to chase down defending Toshiba Classic champion Jay Haas and the $247,500 winner’s check at the $1.7 million Toshiba Classic, televised by Golf Channel from the par-71, 6,598-yard Newport Beach Country Club.
“I try and support tournaments in my career. I’ll go to a tournament, then I might not go back there for another year,” said Player from Maui, where he was competing in the Wendy’s Champions SKINS GAME. “Then I’ll go to another tournament. I try and support as many as I can living as far away as I do. Complete article

| Simpson Leads Toshiba Classic Tim Simpson took the first-round lead in the Toshiba Classic with the best round of his Champions Tour career, a bogey-free, 8-under 63 on Friday that left him a shot clear of 2005 winner Mark Johnson.
The 51-year-old Simpson, a four-time winner on the PGA Tour whose career has been sidetracked by Lyme Disease and a series of injuries and other ailments, is winless in 44 starts in parts of three seasons on the 50-and-over tour.
"I shouldn't still be playing. I'm a walking miracle," said Simpson, who had brain stimulation surgery and an electrode planted in his head three years ago.
He had five birdies in a six-hole stretch in a back-nine 30. His previous best on the Champions Tour was a 65 last year in he SAS Championship.
"It's nice to play solid golf," Simpson said. "I missed a couple of short putts, but overall played well."
Johnson opened his bogey-free round with a 58-yard chip-in on his first hole. Complete article

| Langer goes low for Toshiba Classic lead Newport Beach, CA (Sports Network) - Bernhard Langer, a two-time Masters champion, fired his second consecutive round of six-under 65 to grab the second-round lead of the Toshiba Classic.
Langer finished 36 holes at 12-under-par 130, which missed the tournament record by a single stroke. He is three clear of several players at Newport Beach Country Club.
Overnight leader Tim Simpson (70), Mark Johnson (69), Morris Hatalsky (64) and Jeff Sluman (65) are knotted in second place at nine-under 133.
Langer, who trailed Simpson by two to start Saturday's second round, promptly broke into red figures. He spun his approach at the second back to three feet, then drained a long eagle putt at the par-five third. That eagle got him a share of the lead at minus-nine.
The German's next birdie came at the par-four sixth when his 12-footer from the fringe found the bottom of the cup. Langer parred the next four around the turn to stay atop the leaderboard. Complete article

| Interview With Tim Simpson DAVE SENKO: Tim, thanks for joining us. Terrific start, 8‑under, which according to our media guides, matches your career low on the PGA Tour. Last time you did that was at the '89 Southern Open, and did it three times on Tour.
But have you had any competitive rounds you can recall that might have been lower than that like outside the PGA Tour and the Nationwide Tour?
TIM SIMPSON: I shot 60 one year at the Georgia Open. I don't remember if it was in the tournament or the Pro‑Am. I don't remember.
Anyway, I'll take it. It was a good day for me. It would be mediocre for Tiger. I'm really pleased. I've really been battling some pretty nasty sciatica for several years since I started back playing. Having these last two weeks off was very beneficial, because I worked pretty much every day, certainly every other day, with my chiropractor and got it to feeling a whole a lot better.
It was bothering me a little bit today at different times on the course, but, you know, it's just nice to play a good, solid round. I had made some very nice putts, especially on my back 9. The front 9, missed a couple short ones. Missed a five‑footer at 17 and a three‑footer for birdie also at No. 3 where I had on the front fringe in two and I three‑putted.
But you know what, I made some great putts. I came right back at 4 and made 30‑foot breaker, you know, a 10‑foot break‑in putt, and then I'd make a 25‑footer or something on the next hole and a 25‑footer on the next hole. Complete interview

| Interview With Scott Hoch DAVE SENKO: Scott, welcome. Coming off you made the cut last week at Honda, and then two consecutive wins in Florida. Maybe just talk about that. Everything seems to be falling into place. I know you talked in Florida about struggling a little bit. Why?
SCOTT HOCH: Struggling a little bit like how can I play so bad and feel so good? It was. I didn't think I could play that badly when actually I felt pretty good physically.
Yeah, things turned around. Funny part about this game. You want me to go into it?
DAVE SENKO: Yeah, maybe what things have fallen into place for you. Anything in particular?
SCOTT HOCH: I guess the main thing was I played in Hawaii. I was pretty depressed about my game because I didn't understand how I could play that poorly. It was a combination of things. Ended up going to Leadbetter's Academy and saw Sean Hogan.
It wasn't so much hitting the ball. We worked on a few little things, but it wasn't that far off, so that was a good thing about it. But one thing we did find out, we got I putted so poorly out in there in Hawaii. Part of putting is three parts: Reading, being able to read the greens, speed, and the lie. I wasn't doing any of those very good. It wasn't good for me out there.
And then when you don't putt good it puts pressure on the other part of your game, so I think that had a lot to do with why I didn't play very well. Anyway, I saw Sean and it helped a little bit on just hitting the ball. Then we went in, and they got a machine there, did some putting. It's not really a machine, but just videotaped and computerized stuff, and it gets you more crap than you'd ever even want to know about it. complete interviews

| Interview With Fred Funk DAVE SENKO: You're headed to the golf course Fred, but you're back on the Champions' Tour. Just maybe talk about what you've been keeping busy with since Hawaii.
FRED FUNK: Yeah, really busy. I haven't taken but one week off, and that was at Pebble Beach. Played pretty good and played pretty solid on the regular tour, other than I've been having a little trouble with some Sundays. The Sunday at Turtle Bay was brutal and I didn't play well that day obviously.
Been playing pretty solid, and overall it's just a little lack of scoring in the last few weeks. Not really getting rewarded for some of my good shots, and then my bad shots, I don't turn those into saves. That's been a little discouraging, but I've been working really hard and really looking forward to still playing every week.
Coming out here to Newport was one where you know, I'm still torn between which tour to play. I was torn between playing Innisbrook and Bay Hill versus Newport and Valencia. I heard a lot of good things about this course. I played it actually my rookie year in '89 when I think they called it the Little Crosby. Complete article

| Interview With Bernhard Langer DAVE SENKO: Good start, 65. Maybe just talk about your day. 6 birdies and no blemishes on the card.
BERNHARD LANGER: Yeah, played really solid today. Hit the ball really good off the tee. Probably one of my best driving rounds ever. Put myself into a lot of good positions to attack the pins. Maybe didn't get my irons quite close enough on some occasions.
Never really made ‑‑ well, I made one putt about 15 feet on what was that, 11 or 12?
DAVE SENKO: 12.
BERNHARD LANGER: And maybe another 10‑footer on 2, I think it was. That was about it. Everything else was 2‑putt for birdies. Made a lot of the Par-5s in two. I just played very solid. You know, if I had putted like Scott Hoch or Jay Haas, I would have been a couple better, three or four better. Complete interview
