World Golf Hall Of Famer Gary Player Commits To Play In His Sixth Toshiba Classic, Ma

Newport Beach, CA, February 25, 2008 - Gary Player, the most traveled athlete in the history of sports, will travel to Newport Beach Country Club for the first time in five years to compete in his sixth Toshiba Classic.

Player, the 12th World Golf Hall of Famer (inducted in 1974) to be included in one of the Toshiba Classic’s most competitive fields ever, will try to chase down defending Toshiba Classic champion Jay Haas and the $247,500 winner’s check at the $1.7 million Toshiba Classic, televised by Golf Channel from the par-71, 6,598-yard Newport Beach Country Club.

“I try and support tournaments in my career. I’ll go to a tournament, then I might not go back there for another year,” said Player from Maui, where he was competing in the Wendy’s Champions SKINS GAME. “Then I’ll go to another tournament. I try and support as many as I can living as far away as I do.

“I love Toshiba. I love the event there. It’s a wonderful little golf course in the most beautiful part of United States. I think California is still overall, the most beautiful state. It reminds me a lot of South Africa where I live.”

Player, 72, is regarded as a worldwide champion of fitness as well as being a charismatic champion of 24 PGA TOUR, 19 Champions Tour events and 122 other victories across the globe. In fact, no professional athlete has traveled more in their job than Player – over 14 million miles.

Mind will prevail over muscle at new venue in Malaysia, says Dougherty

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (PA) -- Nick Dougherty believes brain and not brawn will determine the winner of this week's Maybank Malaysian Open. The $2 million event is co-sanctioned by the European Tour and the Asian Tour.

The 25-year-old described the 6,979-yard Ross Watson-designed Kota Permai Golf and Country Club course near Kuala Lumpur as "a thinking man's" challenge after his practice round on Wednesday.

"I think the course is great and the greens are in extremely good condition," said the player currently ranked 51st in the world. "It is nice to play a course where you don't just thrash it off the tee with a driver. We play quite a few of those these days.

"You have to plot your way around and the greens are undulating so they can tuck the pins away, so it will matter which side of the fairway you have to come in from," he added. "It's nice to play a thinking man's golf course and I am looking forward to it."

McDowell makes his move in Malaysia

Graeme McDowell charged up the leaderboard at the Maybank Malaysian Open on Friday after picking up three birdies on the front nine to move within a stroke of overnight leader Nick Dougherty.

The 28-year-old Ulsterman began the day on six-under-par after a bogey-free opening round 66 and quickly made up ground on top spot with birdies on the second, third and fifth at Kota Permai Golf and Country Club near Kuala Lumpur.

McDowell parred the rest of the holes on the front nine to reach the turn at nine under, one shot behind Dougherty who fired a brilliant 10-under-par 62 on Thursday to take a two shot lead.

Malaysia's Danny Chia, who started on the back nine, birdied three of his first seven holes to move from seven under to 10 under alongside McDowell.

The 35-year-old from nearby Seremban dropped a stroke with a bogey at the 18th and he remained on nine under after pars on the first two holes of his back nine.

Also making their moves up the leaderboard this morning were Spain's Carlos Rodiles and Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen, who were eight under after nine and six holes respectively, and tied for fourth place with Simon Dyson and Australia's Marcus Fraser who tee off in the afternoon.

Darren Clarke appeared in good shape to make the cut after carding three consecutive birdies to reach five under but former US Open winner Michael Campbell won't feature over the weekend after withdrawing from the tournament due to heat exhaustion after his opening round 84.

Malaysian on course to finally make the cut in third attempt

SHAH ALAM: Golfer Danny Chia was not the only Malaysian smiling yesterday.

After two unsuccessful attempts, fellow Malaysian Iain Steel looks set to join Danny in making the cut for the Maybank Malaysian Open.

Steel, who is of Scottish-Malaysian parentage, carded a three-under 69 in the second round at Kota Permai Golf and Country Club yesterday.

Steel had five birdies against two bogeys on his scorecard for the second round to finish with a five-under 139.

Steel had not been successful in his two previous attempts since joining the Asian Tour two years ago.

“Previously, I started well and then I would throw a few bogeys in there and that would slow me down.

“I managed to keep the momentum going this time,” said the 37-year-old, who started with a two-under 70 on Thursday.

Dyson on top in Malaysia

Simon Dyson narrowly missed a hole-in-one but grabbed the lead at the Maybank Malaysian Open after four birdies on his first seven holes.

The 30-year-old Yorkshireman began the final round at Kota Permai Golf and Country Club on 14-under-par, three strokes behind overnight leader and defending champion Peter Hedblom but charged to within a stroke of the Swede with birdies on the second and fourth.

He continued that momentum to the 212-yard par-three sixth, as his tee shot pitched six feet from the flag and rolled towards the hole, hitting the pin before stopping just inches away.

He tapped home for birdie and took the lead when Hedblom three-putted for bogey to drop his first shot of the day.

Playing together with Dyson and Hedblom in the final group, Argentina's Daniel Vancsik launched an early charge, birdying the first two holes to draw level with the Swede in first place.

But the Argentinian dropped back after bogeys at the fourth and fifth and was two behind Dyson after six holes.

All three players birdied the seventh, leaving Dyson on 18 under, Hedblom on 17 under and Vancsik on 16 under.

But while the top two parred the eighth, Vancsik bogeyed the hole to fall back into a tie for third with India's Arjun Atwal and Sweden's Johan Edfors, who were 15 under through 10 and 16 holes respectively.

Darren Clarke and David Lynn were part of large group on 14 under while Nick Dougherty was on 12 under.

Clarke soars into lead in Malaysia

Darren Clarke fired a scorching seven-under-par 29 on the front nine to surge to the top of the leaderboard at the Maybank Malaysian Open today.

Clarke began the third round five strokes off the lead on seven-under but quickly made up ground on front runners Nick Dougherty, Jyoti Randhawa of India and Danny Chia of Malaysia with birdies on his first three holes at the Kota Permai Golf and Country Club near Kuala Lumpur.

Clarke then parred the next two holes before reeling off a run of four consecutive birdies which moved him to 14-under, giving him a two-stroke lead at the turn.

However, he was unable to add to his advantage after narrowly missing birdie putts on the first three holes of the back nine, allowing Dougherty and Soren Kjeldsen of Denmark to move into a tie for the lead.

After making pars on his first six holes, Dougherty holed back-to-back birdies at the seventh and eighth to regain a share of the top spot.

Arjun Atwal wins Malaysian Open title

KUALA LUMPUR: Arjun Atwal got a huge monkey off his back after edging out defending champion Peter Hedblom of Sweden in a gripping play-off to win his second Malaysian Open title here on Sunday.

This was for the second month in a row that an Indian laid his fingers on an European Tour title. Fellow Kolkata pro SSP Chowrasia had won the Indian Masters at the Delhi Golf Club last month.

Recently exonerated from vehicular homicide charges from a road accident in Orlando last year, Atwal today played like a man possessed and birdied half the holes in a sizzling round of 64 to join Hedblom at 18-under 270 to force a playoff.
