Jeev, Chowrasia, Chopra tee up at world golf championships

Jeev Milkha Singh, who has twice been turned away at the doorstep of victory is hoping for 'better things' at the WGC-CA Championship in Doral, where he will be accompanied by one of the best Asian Tour star casts ever.

The world's best from Tiger Woods to Phil Mickelson will figure in the starting.

In the $8 million event starting Thursday, Jeev, currently sixth on the European Tour and second on Asian Tour, will also have for company S.S.P. Chowrasia, one of the big surprises of this year.

Chowrasia won the Emaar MGF Indian Masters, a co-sanctioned event on Asian and European Tour, and earned a berth by virtue of his position on the European Tour Money List.

Adding to the Indian connection at the tournament will be two-time PGA Tour winner, Daniel Chopra, a great friend of Jeev. The two have played a lot of junior golf and were then on Asian Tour together.

'It will be fun playing with him (Chopra) in the US. He has got great results and is capable of even more. Together we could make a huge impact and with S.S.P. also there, it will be a big boost for Indian golf,' said Jeev, who also has an invite to this year's Masters, where he was 37th last year.

'I'm looking forward to Doral now because I'm playing well,' said Jeev. 'So maybe, there's something better waiting for me there.'

Woods on a roll as top players roll into Doral for WGC-CA Championship

DORAL, Fla. -- Tiger Woods enters this week's WGC-CA Championship on a roll. He has made three PGA TOUR starts in 2008, winning each time. His latest victory came last week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard.

• Woods has won five consecutive TOUR starts overall, dating to 2007 when he won the final two PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup events (BMW Championship and THE TOUR Championship).

• A year ago at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa, Woods hung on to defeat Brett Wetterich by two strokes to capture his sixth CA Championship.

• This is the 10th anniversary of the global series of events, and Woods, the world's No. 1-ranked player, currently has all three World Golf Championships trophies. He won the Accenture Match Play Championship earlier this year and also was victorious at the Bridgestone Invitational last summer.

• A strong field is assembled this week, with 19 of the top 20 players in the Official World Golf Ranking ready to take on historic Doral.

At Doral, Woods' streak brings out awe and frustration among rivals

DORAL, Fla. (AP) -- There are 78 players at the WGC-CA Championship, and one guy playing out of this world.

Tiger Woods is winning at a rate not seen in more than a half-century. Bay Hill was his sixth straight victory around the world among official tournaments, and he is the three-time defending champion this week at Doral.

"He inhales so many wins that there's not much breathing room for the rest of us," Stewart Cink said.

Even a player lined up to get his autograph Wednesday.

Woods lurking at World Golf Championships event, Ogilvy leads

Tiger Woods rolled in two eagles en route to a six-under 66 in the second round of the WGC-CA Championship Friday as he goes for his sixth-straight win on the USPGA Tour.

Showing no signs of slowing down, Woods made three birdies against one bogey and is just one stroke adrift of leader Geoff Ogilvy, who carded a 67 to improve his overall score to 12-under 132.

Woods, who played the par-five holes in a total of four-under, said that was the key to his round.

"The par-fives are where you've got to score," he said. "With today's wind, you could hit two (of them) with irons, so you've got to make sure you take care of those.

"Play those in three-or-four-under and the rest of the round in one-or-two under and you're looking pretty good."

Aiming for his sixth consecutive USPGA tournament victory, Woods finished strong with birdies at his final two holes, sinking a sharply breaking 20-footer at the ninth to punctuate another dynamic round.

Woods has not lost in more than six months, winning five times on the PGA Tour and the European Tour's Dubai Desert Classic.

This World Golf Championships event has become Woods' private playground as he has won it six times in eight attempts on six different courses.

He started Friday two strokes behind first round leaders Ogilvy and Miguel Jimenez, but it did not take long for that to change as he eagled his third hole, the par-five 12th, with a 40-foot bunker shot.

"I had a simple little bunker shot and kept telling myself to make sure I hit it hard enough," he said. "When it landed, I thought that looks pretty good and about two feet out it was centre cut."

Woods added a birdie at the par-four 16th, before picking up another eagle at the par-five first, where he busted a 330-yard drive before hitting a well-judged seven-iron that nestled up little more than six feet from the pin.

He showed he was human as well. Trying to avoid a water hazard on the par-four third, Woods pulled his drive behind a tree and had little choice but to lay up with his second shot.

But that was the first and only blemish on his card.

The 2006 US Open champion, Ogilvy gathered five birdies with no bogies on the day.

Adam Scott's 68 brought him to nine-under for the tournament, placing him three shots back in third.

Jeev soars to tied 4th in WGC-CA, Chowrasia slumps further

MIAMI, March 22: An upwardly mobile Jeev Milkha Singh soared to tied fourth with a sedate second round of two-under 70 even though compatriot SSP Chowrasia continued to grope for form in the WGC-CA Championship that has the Kolkata pro languishing at tied 62nd after the halfway stage.

Smarting from missing out on two Asian Tour titles despite coming so close to clinching both, Jeev seemed determined to alleviate the wounds with a decent finish and his two-day total of six-under 138 kept him firmly on course to better his tied 28th finish here last year.

Woods Moves Within One Shot of Lead at WGC-CA Championship

March 21 (Bloomberg) -- Tiger Woods shot 6-under-par 66, including two eagles, in the second round of the World Golf Championships-CA Championship to close within one shot of leader Geoff Ogilvy.

Ogilvy, who finished third behind Woods a year ago at the tournament at the Doral Resort & Spa in Miami, holds the 36- hole lead for the second time in his career. He won the 2005 Chrysler Classic of Tucson the last time he held the lead after two rounds.

Based on Woods's recent play, Ogilvy's lead may not last. The world's No. 1 golfer has won the past seven events he has entered and overcame a 7-shot deficit after two rounds last week to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Geoff Ogilvy wins

Geoff Ogilvy resisted the Easter Monday challenges of a quartet of Major champions to secure the weather affected WGC – CA Championship at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa in Miami.

The Australian’s final round of one under par 71 was good enough to hold off one of modern golf’s most intimidating chasing packs in the form of Jim Furyk, Retief Goosen, Vijay Singh and Tiger Woods as he recorded the winning score of 17 under par 271 to pick up the trophy and first prize of US$1,350,000.

Furyk, Goosen and Singh shared second place on 16 under, while Woods’s remarkable winning run of seven consecutive victories came to an end in fifth place on 15 under.

“It was good to hold off the group that were behind me – especially that group,” smiled Ogilvy. “You just look at those names – they are all major champions and there is a lot of talent there so it probably gives it something extra.

“In terms of ending Tiger’s winning streak, well, that was going to end somewhere but I’m glad that it was me that did it. Doing it here was nice as well because he has pretty much owned this place for the last three years.”
