Woosnam to embark on new phase of career in Barbados

Ian Woosnam, the last of European golf’s ‘Famous Five’ to turn 50, embarks on a new adventure this week as the expanding European Seniors Tour emerges from its winter slumber with the first event of the 17th season on the sunny Caribbean Island of Barbados.

Woosnam, who won his historic Masters Tournament Green Jacket just a year before the Seniors Tour swung into action for the first time, will have the benefit of local knowledge when he tees up in the unfamiliar role of ‘Tour Rookie’ in the DGM Barbados Open from March 5-7.

The season-opening tournament, now in its eighth year, is played at Royal Westmoreland Golf Club, where the man known universally as “Woosie” – who turned 50 on Sunday – has a home.

Woosnam will be competing at a selection of events on the Seniors Tour, which in 2008 delivers a global Schedule incorporating a host of exciting new locations such as the Azores, the Czech Republic, India, Poland and Russia in addition to the many popular and familiar venues.

Cambridge leads the way at the DGM Barbados Open

A run of four consecutive birdies on the back nine helped Jamaica’s Delroy Cambridge pip his close friend Jerry Bruner of America to the lead after day one of the DGM Barbados Open, at Royal Westmoreland Golf Club.

Joining Bruner in a tie for second on three under par is Australian Graham Banister, who admitted he is “lucky to be alive” after suffering a heart attack just five weeks ago.

Meanwhile Ian Woosnam, playing in his first European Seniors Tour Event after turning 50 at the weekend, finished on level par after an up and down round of 72.

The Welshman, who owns a home in Barbados, had looked to be into his stride after making birdies at the fifth and sixth holes. But a triple bogey seven at the ninth checked his momentum, and he had to settle for a share of eighth place.

Cameron and Cambridge share the lead in Barbados

Jamaica's Delroy Cambridge was joined at the top of the leaderboard by England’s Bob Cameron, with Welshman Ian Woosnam also is in contention to land his maiden European Seniors Tour title after a dazzling display on day two of the DGM Barbados Open.

A three under par round of 69 helped Woosnam – who owns a home on the Caribbean island – to a share of third place, three shots behind the joint leaders.

Woosnam was joined on three under par by Italy’s Giuseppe Cali and Bill Longmuir of Scotland, who was one of many guests on Woosie’s catamaran last Sunday for the Welshman’s 50th birthday.

The 2006 Ryder Cup winning European Team Captain is suffering from a bad back, but played through the pain to post four birdies and a solitary bogey in blustery conditions at Royal Westmoreland Golf Club.

Longmuir lands victory at the DGM Barbados Open

A birdie blitz on the back nine helped Scotland’s Bill Longmuir to a comfortable victory at the DGM Barbados Open on the European Seniors Tour.

Some scintillating golf on the back nine helped Longmuir, who was six shots off the lead after the first day, blow away a high class field – including Ian Woosnam – to register his first victory since The Midas English Seniors Open at the St Mellion International Hotel Golf and Country Club last August.

Despite wet and windy conditions at Royal Westmoreland, the Scot made no fewer than seven birdies - including five in a row from the 13th hole – in a flawless round of golf.

His aggregate score of ten under par was enough to see off the English challenge of Bob Cameron and Nick Job, who finished three and four shots behind respectively.

Joint overnight leader Delroy Cambridge of Jamaica was a further shot back, whilst Woosnam – who owns a home and has a catamaran moored on the Caribbean island – finished his maiden Seniors Tour event on four under par, after a final round of 71.

The Welshman was one of the first to congratulate Longmuir, who automatically shot to the top of the Order of Merit with his victory – the seventh of his Seniors Tour career.

Longmuir, who is attached to The London Golf Club in Kent, the venue for this year’s European Open, said: “It’s a fantastic feeling to win again – you don’t get many days like this, where nearly everything goes right. There were a few jitters towards the end, but I managed to keep my nerves under control for the most part.

“The long putt for birdie on 17 was crucial – once that went in, I knew I had the tournament in the bag. My putter hasn’t always been my best friend lately, but today it was.

“My putting really let me down on the first day, which meant I finished a long way back and had a bit of a mountain to climb. But I still played fairly solidly from tee to green, so I knew I had it in me.

“Luckily I’m not flying back to England until Tuesday, so I’m sure there will be a few drinks sunk between now and then. Hopefully Woosie will join me – I’m sure he won’t need much persuading.”

Woosnam had threatened to shoot himself into contention, but two birdies on the back nine put pay to his hopes, and he had to be content with fifth place.
