| Goya aiming to produce another masterpiece Estanislao Goya of Argentina will attempt to complete a quick-fire double in his homeland when he tees up in the 103° Abierto VISA de la Republica presentado por Peugeot at the Hurlingham Club in Buenos Aires this week.
The 19 year old, who beat England’s Gary Boyd in a play-off for the Abierto del Centro presentado por Personal in Cordboba last weekend, climbed 66 places on the European Challenge Tour Rankings to lie in third with €21,996.
Goya is tucked in right behind the man who defends the title he won at Buenos Aires Golf Club, Marco Ruiz of Paraguay, who has only been able to savour the feeling of being a champion for a matter of four short months!
Due to a re-scheduling of events by the Tour de las America, who jointly sanction the event with the Challenge Tour, the 103rd edition of the event starts just 113 days after the 102nd edition finished, where Ruiz took the title by two shots from Daniel Vancsik and by five from US Open Champion, Angel Cabrera.
Ruiz can overtake Challenge Tour Number One, Iain Pyman of England, by making a successful defence of his title while back to back victories would also carry the rookie Goya to the top spot after the fifth event of the 2008 campaign.
Boyd, now fourth in the Rankings from tenth position, also contests the Alberto VISA de la Republica presentado por Peugeot, in a bid to go one better after his runner-up finish behind Goya last Sunday.
Goya only turned professional four months ago after winning the Tour de las Americas Qualifying School in Florida by nine shots, breaking Johnnie Miller's 32 year old course record 63 at the Bonaventure Country Club with a sparking 61 on his way to victory.
After becoming the youngest winner of the Abierto VISA del Centro presentado por Personal, he said: "It is a good start to my professional career. It was great to play in the last group of a big event for the first time and hopefully I will be in the same position in other big tournaments in the future. I am just going to keep working hard and taking one day at a time.”
Miguel Rodriguez of Argentina, who won the opening event of the 2008 season in Argentina in December, the Abierto del Litoral Personal in Rosario, bids to win his second title in four months along with a clutch of European Tour champions in fellow countrymen Jorge Berendt, Ricardo Gonzalez and Vancsik. |

| Monguzzi snatches the lead in Argentina Argentina’s Martin Monguzzi snatched the first round lead at the 103 Abierto VISA de la Republica presentado por Peugeot from European Tour regulars Stephen Browne and Daniel Vancsik.
Ireland’s Browne and Vancsik of Argentina looked certain to lead the way at Argentina’s National Open Championship having posted a pair of five under par 65s at the Hurlingham Golf Club in Buenos Aries, but Monguzzi stole the show late in the day with a fine 64 to take the outright lead at this, the fifth event on the 2008 Challenge Tour Schedule, co-sanctioned with the Tour de Las Americas (TLA).
It was an outstanding day for the European contingent in Argentina, with seven of the top 12 on the first round leaderboard having journeyed across the Atlantic to the magnificent Hurlingham Golf Club.
Christophe Gunther of Germany and Belgium’s Nicolas Vanhootegem joined Argentina’s Rodolfo Gonzalez on four under par, with Finland’s Antti Ahokas, the English pair of Matthew Cort and Marcus Higley, Italy’s Michele Reale and the Swede Fredrik Widmark all in contention after opening scores of three under par 67.
For the moment, though, Monguzzi is the man to beat. The 26 year old, the son of famous Argentinean amateur Roberto, who played the 1968 Open Championship won by Gary Player, is eyeing his first win as a professional.
“We all saw what Estanislao (Goya) did on Sunday, and new doors opened for him because of that win,” said Monguzzi of his friend who won last week’s Abierto Visa del Centro to set up a new career in Europe. “Hopefully, I could follow in his footsteps.
“Everything went well for me today, despite the bogey at the 13th, where I went over the green with my third shot. My ball striking from the tee was perfect and I sank a few good putts,” added the leader of the US $200,000 championship. |

| Home from home sees Browne lead in Argentina A second consecutive 65 gave Ireland’s Stephen Browne a two stroke advantage over Argentina’s Martín Monguzzi at the halfway stage of the 103 Abierto VISA de la Republica presentado por Peugeot.
The 34 year old from Dublin may be over 10,000 kilometres from home at Argentina’s National Open championship, but he feels that, given the similarities between the Hurlingham Golf Club in Buenos Aries and his local club on the outskirts of Ireland’s capital city, that he could be playing on home soil.
Browne’s performance over the first two rounds has been confident and assured, his second round of five under par in two days taking him to the top of the leaderboard, two strokes ahead of Monguzzi, three clear of Finland’s Antti Ahokas and four ahead of last week’s Challenge Tour winner, Estanislao Goya. | Ahokas on the ascent in Argentina Antti Ahokas of Finland made the most of his strength of the tee and his superb short game to establish a three stroke lead at the 103 Abierto VISA de la Republica presentado por Peugeot.
The 23 year old left hander cared a four under par 66 at the Hurlingham Golf Club in Buenos Aries to move to 11 under par 199, three shots ahead of Argentina’s Martín Monguzzi and four ahead of second round leader Stephen Browne.
Monguzzi kept himself in the running with a level par 70 on day three, while Browne, despite a three over par 73, is still very much in contention to win a third Challenge Tour title.
Argentina’s Estanislao Goya, winner of the Abierto de Centro last Sunday, is still in the hunt after his own 70 saw him join England’s David Horsey on six under 204. Complete article |

| Ahokas finds redemption in Argentina Finland’s Antti Ahokas secured his maiden European Challenge Tour title after a final round 71 helped him to a three-shot win at the 103rd Abierto VISA de la Republica presentado por Peugeot at Hurlingham Golf Club, in Buenos Aires.
In so doing, Ahokas also became the first left hander to triumph at the event, which is co-sanctioned by the Challenge Tour and the Tour de las Americas.
Ahokas’ 10 under par aggregate score 270 was enough to fend off the dual home challenge of runner up Martin Monguzzi, who led the event after the first day, and Estanislao Goya in third place.
Goya finished a further shot behind Monguzzi on six under par, thereby failing to record back-to-back victories after his win at last week’s Abierto del Centro presentado por Personal in Cordoba. Complete article |
