Kaymer looking to go one better in Sweden

Germany’s Martin Kaymer is heading into this week’s SAS Masters in Stockholm determined to leave nothing to chance in his Ryder Cup selection campaign.

The 23 year old was in a tie for second at the Arlandastad event last year and is hoping to go one better this time round in an attempt to secure his spot in Nick Faldo’s European Team.

He currently sits 11th on the Ryder Cup table after winning the BMW International Open and the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship this season, but a win in Sweden would move him into an automatic top-ten qualifying spot.

With that in mind, Kaymer is extra focused - especially as he believes Europe’s more experienced players “deserve” the two wild-card selections.

He said: "Colin Montgomerie, Darren Clarke and Paul Casey will deserve to get the wild-cards before me.

"Montgomerie's statistics show that he is different class when it comes to Ryder Cup and Clarke and Casey have so much more experience than me.

"I wouldn't expect a pick even if I finished 11th on the table."

Eagle-eyed Dougherty off to flying start in Stockholm

Nick Dougherty has gotten off to a fine start in his bid to win the SAS Masters and claim a place in Europe’s Ryder Cup Team.

The Englishman, who is 15th in the standings with three events to play, holed a 142 yard shot for an eagle two on the 12th - he started on the back nine - and then added a birdie three at the 14th.

It leaves him three under par after ten holes, tied with Peter Fowler, who responded to a bogey at the third with five birdies. A bogey at the 13th has brought the Australian back to three under and a two-way tie for the lead.

Back on the Arlandastad course where he was a joint runner-up last year, Dougherty looked like dropping a stroke straightaway as he teed off in wind and rain.

But a putt from 30 feet saved him an opening par and his eagle came with a wedge - the hole was playing downwind - shortly afterwards.

Not that he knew it had gone in for several minutes - it was only discovered when playing partner Robert Karlsson peered into the cup.

Dougherty and Hanson set early standard in Sweden

Nick Dougherty and Peter Hanson both shot superb rounds of 66 to set the early clubhouse target at four under par at the SAS Masters.

Hanson, starting on the back nine, gave little indication of what was to come when he sandwiched birdies at the 15th and 16th with bogeys at the tenth and 18th, but then his fortunes changed.

He followed a birdie at the first with another couple at the fourth and fifth, before taking his sixth of the day at the last for inward-nine score of 30.

England’s Dougherty, 15th in the European Ryder Cup standings, joined Hanson on four under after a flawless round containing two birdies and an eagle.

The Englishman holed a 142 yard shot for an eagle two on the 12th - he started on the back nine - and then added a birdie three at the 14th.

Trio share lead at SAS Masters

Pedro Linhart, Nick Dougherty and Peter Hanson share the lead on four under par after shooting fine first round scores of 66 at the SAS Masters.

Hanson and Dougherty had already set the benchmark earlier in the day, but were later joined by Spain’s Linhart who balanced three bogies with seven birdies.

Initially it looked as if the 45 year old would struggle when he dropped a shot at the 11th - he started on the tenth - but he quickly recovered with birdies at the 12th, 14th and first holes.

Bogeys followed at the second and seventh, but he diluted their impact with birdies at the third, fifth, eighth and ninth for a front nine score of 31.

Hanson, starting on the back nine, also gave little indication of what was to come when he sandwiched birdies at the 15th and 16th with bogeys at the tenth and 18th, but then his fortunes changed.

He followed a birdie at the first with another couple at the fourth and fifth. A run of three straight pars then followed for the Swede before he wrapped up an inward nine 30 with a birdie at his last hole.

Kjeldsen sets SAS target but Wood steals show

Søren Kjeldsen shot a superb second round 65 to set the early clubhouse lead at six under par, but the headlines at the SAS Masters have been stolen by Chris Wood.

The 20 year old from England, playing his first professional event after finishing fifth in The Open Championship last month, added a three under par 67 to his opening 70 to sit just three strokes off the lead.

The former England international, whose inspired performance at Royal Birkdale was the best by an amateur in a Major since Justin Rose came fourth on the same course ten years ago, twice shared top spot during the round.

"This is exactly what I had in mind - trying to challenge the lead," said Wood. "I am as good if not better than a lot of them, I think.

"My coach and I have always known I have the ability to do it. I just needed the opportunity and I got it at The Open and took it.

"I just played my normal golf there and it gives me a huge amount of confidence."

Hanson and Orr blazing trail at SAS Masters

Peter Hanson and Gary Orr are on course to set a new second round clubhouse lead at the SAS Masters after breezing to seven under par after nine holes.

Hanson held a share of the overnight lead on four under par coming into the second round, but immediately improved his score to six under with birdies at both the first and second holes.

A third birdie followed at the sixth before a run of three straight pars took him to the turn in 31, seven under overall.

He is joined by Scotland’s Orr, who started on the back nine with a score of three under after an opening 67.

He took a birdie on the tenth to get his campaign on track and then scooped a hat-trick of birdies from the 13th to put himself in the frame for a first title on The European Tour since 2000.

Nick Dougherty, who is in the hunt for a place in Europe’s Ryder Cup team, was in a tie for the lead after the first round and remains in contention after nine holes.

Dougherty and Hanson top the table in Sweden

Ryder Cup hopeful Nick Dougherty produced a sparkling finish to regain a share of the lead at the SAS Masters going into the weekend.

The 26 year old from England birdied three of the last four holes for a second successive 66 at Arlandastad and goes into the weekend alongside Swede Peter Hanson on eight under par.

Dougherty, leader of The Ryder Cup points table last October, has fallen to 15th since the death of his mother, but has been determined to play with a smile on his face this week. So far it is working wonders.

"That's how I play and it's nice to be doing it again," he said. "The Ryder Cup would be lovely and I would be an idiot if I said it does not matter, but more important is enjoying my golf again.

"I've had my reasons to feel a bit down, but considering how I've played the last few months I've a lot to smile about this week."

Hanson battles windy, cold conditions to win SAS Masters golf event by one shot

Peter Hanson shot 1-over-par 71 in cold, windy and wet conditions and held on to win the SAS Masters on Sunday for his second career European PGA Tour victory.

Hanson, the first Swede to win the event since Jesper Parnevik 10 years ago, finished with a 9-under-par, 271 total over the Arlandastad course north of Stockholm.

Compatriot Pelle Edberg, who was Hanson's playing partner in the last group, tied for second with Nick Dougherty of England. Edberg and Dougherty shot 70.

It was Dougherty's second straight runner-up finish in the event. It was also his best result since going without a top-50 finish in seven straight tournaments following the death of his mother in April.
