Woburn set for another golfing chapter

The European Seniors Tour arrives at the scene of some of European golf’s great moments this week when Woburn Golf Club plays host to the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters.

Indeed, many of the Seniors Tour players in action over the immaculate Duke’s Course have played their part in Woburn’s rich golfing history, including Order of Merit leader Ian Woosnam, Gordon Brand Jnr, and Mark James.

Woosnam will have the fondest of Woburn memories to recall as he looks to secure the John Jacobs Trophy in this his rookie season on the Seniors Tour.

The Welshman tasted British Masters success in 1994 and will attempt to emulate his fellow former Ryder Cup Captain James by adding the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters title to his European Tour success of 14 years ago.

Englishman James took the 1990 British Masters at Woburn before adding the Senior Masters title in 2005. That recent success will make James among the favourites to win the first prize from an impressive £250,000 total prize fund.

Franco off to a flier at Woburn

Paraguay’s Angel Franco may not enjoy the same profile as Tiger Woods but he matched the World No. 1’s bravery when he overcame a painful knee injury to fire a spectacular six under par 66 and storm to the top of the leaderboard after the first round of the Travis Perkins plc Seniors Masters over the Duke’s Course at Woburn.

The Paraguayan Dunhill Cup player carded five birdies and an eagle on the 505-yard par five 11th hole to go into the second round two shots in front of Argentina’s Horacio Carbonetti, Spain’s Juan Quiros and England’s Gordon J. Brand who arrived at Woburn having won last week’s De Vere PGA Seniors Championship at Slaley Hall.

Former Ryder Cup captain Mark James carded a fine three under par 69 to share fifth place with Bob Boyd, Jim Rhodes and John Bland while Italy’s Costantino Rocca and England’s Bob Cameron were tied tenth after two under par rounds of 70.

Quiros leads Brand by one at Woburn

Spain’s Juan Quiros holds a slender one shot lead over England’s Gordon J. Brand heading into the final round of the Travis Perkins Seniors Masters at Woburn Golf Club.

The Spaniard, who is known as the European Seniors Tour’s King of the Mountains because two of his previous three victories have come in the Swiss Alps and in the shadow of Mont Blanc, recorded a second successive round of four under par 68 for a 36-hole aggregate of 136.

Brand carded a three under par 69 to add to his opening 69 while 2007 European Seniors Tour No. 1 Carl Mason stormed into contention with a spectacular 66 that left him in a share of third place alongside compatriot Jim Rhodes.

Quiros got his round off to the sensational start when he holed out from eight feet for an eagle on the 514-yard par-5 first hole. He went on to add birdies on the fifth and the tenth for a flawless round that left all his rivals trailing in his wake.

Brand seals back-to-back wins

England’s Gordon J. Brand saw his rich run of form continue when he closed with a two under par 70 to win his second European Seniors Tour title in the space of seven days at the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters at Woburn Golf Club.

The previous weekend Brand needed six extra holes to see off the challenge of Gordon Brand Jnr at the De Vere PGA Seniors Championship at Slaley Hall but this time he birdied the first to move in front and then recorded further birdies on the fourth, ninth, 11th and 18th to finish two shots in front of Spain’s Juan Quiros and three ahead of defending champion Carl Mason on nine under par 207.

The win was worth €46,986 (£37,500) and took his earnings for the two tournaments to €110,446 (£97,500).
