Bland continues his hot streak

England’s Richard Bland continued his fine run of recent form by topping the Trophée du Golf Club de Genève leaderboard with an opening round of 65.

Having finished inside the top ten in his last three European Challenge Tour appearances, Bland swiftly got back in the groove at Golf Club de Genève, carding eight birdies and a solitary bogey to lead by one shot from Spain’s Rafael Cabrera Bello and Australia’s Matthew Tampion.

Bland, a close friend of former Southampton star Matt Le Tissier, is full of confidence after finishing third at last week’s Lexus Open and runner-up at the Challenge of Ireland presented by Glasson, and is now determined to add to his solitary Challenge Tour victory, at the 2001 Grand Final.

The 35 year old, who has a wealth of European Tour experience, said: “I’ve been playing pretty well for a couple of months now, and my short game and putting in particular have improved. So even when I don’t find the greens, more often that not I’m still walking away with pars, which is so crucial for your momentum. I’m definitely old enough – and probably stupid enough – to know what works for me now, and what doesn’t. This time I’m really sticking to it, and not straying from the beaten track.

Cabrera Bello reigns in Geneva

Despite downpours which made for sometimes treacherous playing conditions, Spain’s Rafael Cabrera Bello broke par for the second consecutive day to lead the Trophée du Golf Club de Genève by one shot from Marco Ruiz of Paraguay.

With heavy rain forecast for much of the afternoon, Cabrera Bello’s aggregate total of 136 – eight under par – might take some toppling.

A steady round of 70 put the Spaniard in sight of his second victory on Swiss soil, after his triumph at the recent Credit Suisse Challenge.

He said: “It was quite difficult in the conditions, because I’m not used to wearing waterproof clothes where I come from in Gran Canaria! But I know I’m playing well at the moment, so I didn’t let it affect my game.”

Cabrera Bello is currently one shot clear of Paraguay’s Marco Ruiz, who moved to seven under par after a round of 67 which was, in the conditions, a stunning effort.

Ruiz’s round was then matched by Scotland’s Greig Hutcheon, who finished with a run of threes on his final four holes to move firmly into contention at the half-way stage.

Hutcheon collected five birdies and an eagle – his second of the event – to move to five under par.

Flying Dutchman leads in Geneva

Rising star Wil Besseling of the Netherlands has targeted his second Challenge Tour victory after a blistering round of 64 shot him to the top of the leaderboard at the half-way stage of the Trophée du Golf Club de Genève.

Some stupendous strokeplay saw Besseling, the II Club Colombia Masters champion, move to 12 under par, two shots clear of Scotland’s Steven O’Hara, whose round of 66 was certainly not to be sniffed at.

A pair of eagles were a mark of Besseling’s brilliance, as was his ability to combat the conditions at a rainswept Golf Club de Genève.

Another birdie blitz from brilliant Besseling

Wil Besseling of the Netherlands admitted he had sometimes allowed his mind to drift to what it might be like to join his friend and compatriot Joost Luiten on The European Tour, after a sublime round of 67 on the third day at Golf Club de Genève put him in sight of his second Challenge Tour title.

But the flying Dutchman vowed to set such thoughts to one side and instead concentrate on adding the Trophée du Golf Club de Genève to the II Club Colombia Masters title he lifted earlier in the season.

Besseling, currently eighth in the Challenge Tour Rankings, made six birdies and added his fourth eagle of the tournament on the 13th hole to move to 17 under par, five shots clear of his nearest challengers Richard Bland of England and Brazilian Alexandre Rocha.

Eriksson in a Klas of his own

A stunning final round of 63 – the lowest of his career – saw Sweden’s Klas Eriksson surge through the field to claim his second European Challenge Tour title at the Trophée du Golf Club de Genève.

Eleven birdies in a quite astonishing final round at Golf Club de Genève saw Eriksson finish on 14 under par, level with overnight leader Wil Besseling of the Netherlands and Brazilian Alexandre Rocha.

Having seen off Rocha at the third hole of a dramatic play-off, the experienced Eriksson then sunk a 20ft putt for birdie at the fourth extra hole to end the challenge of Besseling, who held a five shot lead over the field going into the final day.
