| Challenge Tour returns to the Czech Republic For the first time in a decade the European Challenge Tour will visit the Czech Republic this week for the Ypsilon Golf Challenge by Alex Cejka, where Scotland’s George Murray and Alexandre Rocha of Brazil will bid to bounce back after coming agonisingly close to securing victories last weekend.
The omens are good for Murray – who missed out in the Vodafone Challenge in Germany by just one shot – as the last player to win a Challenge Tour event in the Czech Republic was a Scotsman, Stephen Gallacher capturing the inaugural KB Golf Challenge in 1998.
Similarly, despite losing out in a play-off in the Trophée du Golf Club de Genève – the second Challenge Tour event to be played last week – Rocha at least consoled himself with a healthy cheque which saw him move to 11th place in the Challenge Tour Rankings, currently headed by England’s David Horsey.
Horsey is himself bidding to make history by becoming the first player to gain automatic promotion to The European Tour by capturing three Challenge Tour titles in the same season and will continue that bid in Liberec, one of 16 winners from the 2008 Challenge Tour season who will be vying for the lion’s share of the €180,000 prize fund. | Four way tie at the top in Czech Republic Three Englishmen and a Swiss sit on top of a packed leaderboard after the opening round of the Ypsilon Golf Challenge by Alex Cejka on the European Challenge Tour.
Late in the day at a sunkissed Ypsilon Golf Resort in Liberec, Czech Republic, England’s Matthew King showed signs of a welcome return to form with a round of 65, to go level on six under par with his compatriots Marcus Higley and Matthew Cort, and Switzerland’s Julien Clément. |

| Santos steals a march on his rivals Portugal’s Ricardo Santos put the pain of seven consecutive missed cuts firmly behind him with a stunning round of 64 to grab the clubhouse lead on day two of the Ypsilon Golf Challenge by Alex Cejka.
Santos, who has two fourth place finishes to his name this season, has not earned a penny on the Challenge Tour since the Reale Challenge de España in June. But seven birdies at Ypsilon Golf Resort in Liberec, the Czech Republic, moved him to 11 under par, and put the 26 year old in with a great chance of claiming the lion’s share of the €180,000 on offer.
Santos said: “The big difference today was my putting. I hadn’t actually been playing that badly from tee to green when I was missing all those cuts – the puts just weren’t dropping for me. Obviously I lost some confidence, but I won a Europro tournament in Portugal three weeks ago, and that got my season going again. Hopefully I can keep it going tomorrow and build up more confidence. But before that I have to take my girlfriend out to dinner, because it’s her birthday today and she did a good job as my caddy!” Source |

| Rafael and Ricardo in Czech stalemate A late show from the in-form Rafael Cabrera Bello saw the Spaniard join Portugal’s Ricardo Santos at the top of the leaderboard on day two of the Ypsilon Golf Challenge by Alex Cejka.
With his country in a state of mourning – Cabrera Bello hails from the Canary Islands, the intended destination of the plane which crash landed at Madrid Airport on Wednesday – the Spaniard was in understandably sombre mood at Ypsilon Golf Resort in Liberec, Czech Republic.
But he set about his task in typically professional fashion, plundering seven birdies in a round of 64 to join Santos on 11 under par.
Cabrera Bello said: “I just played really well today – my only complaint is that I wasn’t able to birdie any of the par fives. Other than that, it felt quite easy today. It helps that the course is in fantastic condition. Sometimes when you come to countries where golf isn’t very popular, you worry that the course might not be in great shape. But that’s definitely not the case here.”
Cabrera Bello’s round of 64 was matched by Santos, who put the pain of seven consecutive missed cuts firmly behind him. Source |

| Cabrera Bello has the field in check After a round of 65 at the Ypsilon Golf Challenge by Alex Cejka moved him to within two shots of the lead held by Rafael Cabrera Bello of Spain, England’s Seve Benson has targeted both his second Challenge Tour title and the Number One Spot in the Rankings.
But the man standing in his way is in sizzling form. Cabrera Bello, who finished tied 11th at last week’s Trophée du Golf Club de Genève, posted seven birdies in a round of 65 at Ypsilon Golf Resort in Liberec, the Czech Republic, to move to 17 under par.
The Spaniard, who also has one Challenge Tour title to his name, said: “I just feel really comfortable out there. I’ve been playing well for the past couple of weeks now, and I’ve carried it on this week. I’m leading, so if I said I didn’t want to win the tournament, then obviously I would be lying – or stupid! But it doesn’t just depend on me, because there are a lot of good players just a couple of shots back. Whoever shoots low tomorrow will probably win. I just hope it’s me.” Source |

| Benson claims second Challenge Tour title England’s Seve Benson moved one step closer to The European Tour after securing his second Challenge Tour victory courtesy of a nail-biting play-off victory at the Ypsilon Golf Challenge by Alex Cejka.
In torrential rain at Ypsilon Golf Resort in Liberec, the Czech Republic, Benson compiled a battling round of 70 to finish on 16 under par, level with overnight leader Rafael Cabrera Bello of Spain and South Africa’s Branden Grace, whose 64 was quite astonishing in the circumstances.
After Grace had fallen at the second play-off hole, which both Benson and Cabrera Bello birdied, the Englishman saw off the Spaniard with another birdie on the third extra hole to take the title and claim a winner’s cheque for €28,800. Source |
