| Dutch Delight for Larrazabal Spain’s Pablo Larrazabal fired a timely four under par 68 to move into the lead at the Dutch Futures, the fifth last European Challenge Tour event of the 2007 season.
Larrazabal, currently 71st on the Challenge Tour Rankings, is in need of a big result as the events begin to run out on the Schedule for those players hoping to break into the all important end of season top 20.
The Spaniard is certainly in that category. It is a case of now or never with time, and tournament s running out, but, despite that added pressure, the 24 year old from Barcelona crafted a fine opening score to take the first round lead at the Golfclub Houtrak on the outskirts of Amsterdam.
Larrazabal, whose best finish of the season (fourth) came at the recent POSTBANK Challenge presented by Marcel Siem, made a fine start to his round with a birdie at the second hole. He dropped a stroke at the seventh but hit back instantly with a brilliant eagle three on the eight to get back under par.
Another eagle three on the par five 13th took Larrazabal to four under for the day and seemed to set him up for a low scoring finish, but a frustrating last four holes that saw him finish bogey-birdie-bogey-birdie meant he had to settle for an opening 68.
Still, his first round was good enough to ensure a one stroke lead over Englishman Ben Mason and Scotland’s Peter Whiteford, with eight players sharing fourth spot in two under par.
Holland’s rising Joost Luiten, currently fifth on the Challenge Tour Rankings, fired a disappointing opening score of five over par 77 and will require one his trademark low scoring rounds to survive the halfway cut.
Inder Van Weerelt is the best placed Dutchman in the field in a tie for 12th place on one under par 71. |

| Birdie finish keeps Larrazabal in front Spain’s Pablo Lazzarabal birdied the last two holes to retain the clubhouse lead in The Dutch Futures as he looks to claim his maiden victory at the Golfclub Houtrak on the outskirts of Amsterdam.
Larrazabal, the brother of 2002 Amateur Champion Alejandro, carded a two under par 70 for a 36 hole total of 138, six under par, and a one stroke lead over Scotland’s Peter Whiteford, who shot a 70.
England’s Ben Mason completed his round on Saturday morning following flooding to the course and a delay of almost two hours on Friday. Mason was one of 40 players who returned early to finish and he holds outright third place on 141, three under par.
Larrazabal, the first round leader, was steady for the first 16 holes, mixing three birdies with three bogeys, before edging past Whiteford with birdies on the eighth and ninth holes, his last two. On the par five eighth he found the middle of the green with a drive and a four iron and two putted for birdie and then followed that with a nine iron to 12 feet on the last which he duly converted to take the lead. | Devastating Whiteford takes nine shot lead in Holland Scotland’s Peter Whiteford produced the performance of a lifetime, a quite stunning nine under par 63 in horrendous conditions, to devastate the field at the Dutch Futures and establish an astonishing nine shot lead going into the final round.
With constant, driving rain and wind battering the Golfclub Houtrak on the outskirts of Amsterdam, the Kirkcaldy 27 year old produced a staggering display of shot making to reduce his opponents into what seems certain to be a race for second place.
The fact that only two other players in the field broke 70 – second placed Adam Gee fired a 68 and Italy’s Alessio Bruschi a 69 – says everything for the special nature of Whiteford’s third round performance.
His reward is a nine stroke lead over Gee and an 11 shot advantage over the five men sharing third place on three under – a full 11 strokes behind Whiteford’s frightening 14 under par 202 total. Entire article |

| Whiteford delights at Dutch victory Scotland’s Peter Whiteford overcame a nerve-shredding final round to secure the first European Challenge Tour victory of his career and set up a golden opportunity to win a place on The 2008 European Tour with victory at the Dutch Futures tournament in Holland yesterday.
Whiteford, who took a staggering nine stroke lead into the last 18 holes, resisted a final round charge from Frenchman François Delamontagne to close out a two stroke victory at the Golfclub Houtrak on the outskirts of Amsterdam with a fourth round 73 for a 13 under par 275 winning total.
Whiteford’s win, worth €22,400, propelled the 27 year old to 26th place on the Challenge Tour Rankings with four events of the season remaining. He is now looking to break into the all important top 20 before the Schedule is complete to win a potentially priceless place on The 2008 European Tour. Entire article |
