Three's company for Madrid leaders

Paul Broadhurst, Marcus Fraser and Magnus A Carlsson all hit four under par 67s to share the lead at the Madrid Masters at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.

The trio ended the first day a shot better off than a group of five including home player Pablo Larrazabal, who compiled a three under 68.

Broadhurst started at the tenth and he picked up shots at the 15th and 18th on the way out.

He then birdied the short par three third and the 518 yard fourth.

Back to back bogeys at the fifth and sixth dropped the Englishman back but he birdied the seventh and par three ninth – his last – to go four under.

Schwartzel and Fraser share halfway lead

Charl Schwartzel defied feeling unwell to produce a superb second round at the Madrid Masters and share the halfway lead with Marcus Frased on nine under par at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.

Australian Fraser - who led with Paul Broadhurst and Magnus A Carlsson overnight on four under after an opening 67 – went one better with a 66.

South Africa’s Schwartzel produced a six under 65 to improve on his first day 68.

Starting at the tenth, Schwartzel gained shots on three consecutive holes with birdies at the 13th, 14th and 15th.

He came back in a four under par 32, thanks largely to an eagle three at the 518 yard par five fourth, which he followed with birdies at the seventh and eighth.

Schwartzel holds slender lead

Charl Schwartzel birdied the 18th to give himself a one shot lead over Ricardo Gonzalez at the top of the Madrid Masters leaderboard after three rounds at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.

South African Schwartzel - who led with Marcus Fraser on nine under overnight - hit a four under par 67 to go 14 under for the tournament.

But Argentine Gonzalez produced a blistering nine under par 62 to sit a shot behind in second on 13 under par.

Schwartzel gained shots at the fourth and fifth before an eagle at the 540 yard par five seventh.

He birdied the eighth but dropped a shot at the par three ninth to reach the turn in 32.

Schwartzel - who admitted to feeling unwell yesterday - dropped another shot at the 12th but birdies at the par five 14th and the 18th ensure he will lead going into tomorrow’s final round.

Schwartzel reigns in Spain

Charl Schwartzel sealed a fine victory in the Madrid Masters after producing a bogey free final round of 66 at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid for a 19 under par total of 199.

The South African finished three shots clear of Ricardo Gonzalez after a five under par round in Spain clinched his third European Tour title.

Having started the day 14 under, the South African picked up shots at both par fives on the front nine, the fourth and the seventh.

Schwartzel posted consecutive birdies at the 13th and 14th and when he picked up another shot at the 17th it spelled the end for those trying to overhaul him at the top of the leaderboard.

Schwartzel had admitted to feeling ill during the week and struggled with a shoulder problem during the second round but he said he felt better after lifting the title.

"I played very well again today," said the 24 year old. "I woke up this morning and felt a lot better than I have been feeling.
