Merriman and Milne share the lead in Italy

Australia’s David Merriman and American Chuck Milne both carded six under par rounds of 66 to leave the big names in the shade after the first round of the Lake Garda Italian Seniors Open at the Palazzo Arzaga Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort.

The 53 year-old former club professional from Sydney and his 60 year-old rival from Portland, Oregon, fired 15 birdies between them to go into the second round a shot in front of Chile’s Guillermo Encina and England’s Phil Harrison while local favourite, Costantino Rocca, returned a four under par 68 to end the first day in a share of fifth place alongside recent Scottish Seniors Open champion Peter Mitchell, Domingo Hospital, Luis Carbonetti, Jim Lapsley and Northern Ireland’s Eddie Polland.

However, it was not such a good day for current European Seniors Tour Order of Merit leader, Ian Woosnam, or for the 2007 Number One, Carl Mason, who posted level par rounds of 72 to go into the second round in a share of 23rd place with Nick Job, Pete Oakley, Martin Gray, Bruce Heuchan, Bob Cameron and Jean Pierre Sallat.

Mitchell shares the lead in Italy

England’s Peter Mitchell carded a fine five under par 67 to claim a share of the lead alongside Chile’s Guillermo Encina after the second round of the Lake Garda Italian Seniors Open at Palazzo Arzaga Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort.

Mitchell and Encina go into the final round on nine under par 135 and with a single shot lead over England’s Gordon J. Brand and Spaniard Emilio Rodriguez who stormed through the field with a spectacular nine under par 63 that included no less than ten birdies.

Ian Woosnam, the European Seniors Tour Order of Merit leader, is also still very much in contention. The Welsh former Ryder Cup captain carded a superb seven under par 65 that saw him jump up from 23rd place into a tie for fifth alongside local favourite Costantino Rocca on seven under par 137.

Mitchell holds on for third Seniors Tour victory

England’s Peter Mitchell carded a closing round of four under par 68 to claim his third victory of the season at the Lake Garda Italian Seniors Open at the Palazzo Arzaga Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort.

The 50 year-old from Kent started the day tied with Chile’s Guillermo Encina but in the end had to withstand a sustained challenge from both Ian Woosnam and Gordon J. Brand before winning by one shot on 13 under par 203.

The victory was worth €30,0000 (£23,364) and helped the Englishman to climb up to fourth place on the European Seniors Tour Order of Merit behind Woosnam, Bernhard Langer and Brand.

Mitchell had opened with rounds of 68 and 67 and produced five birdies and a bogey to edge out his nearest rivals in one of the most exciting finishes seen on this season’s Seniors Tour.

“That’s the hardest I have ever had to work to win a tournament,” the exhausted Englishman said after rolling a curling three-foot putt into the hole on the treacherous 435-yard par-4 final hole.
