I played Lane Creek Golf Course the other day. It's only my second golf course ever so I don't have alot to compare it to. The course is set in the beautiful Lane Creek Community. It's set to be in the residents' back yards on just about every hole. This course is very challenging, with lots of water hazards and bunkers. The fairways are pretty narrow, so accuracy is very important. I played with 3 guys from my job. We played best ball against the course.

On the front nine, we kept getting ourselves into trouble, but we managed to scramble every time. I think we managed to get a couple of birdies, but we ended up bogey on a couple of holes as well. At the end of the nine, we were shooting even. Then we took a break in their clubhouse. They sell hotdogs, sandwiches, chips and beer. The girl who was behind the counter was very nice, and very nice looking I might add.

On the back nine, we kept getting ourselves into trouble as well. But we weren't able to scramble and save par on holes like we did on the front nine. The back nine is much more challenging than the front. We managed to shoot 2 over, which I felt was pretty good.

So far, this is the best golf course I've ever played on. Our tee time was at 8:56AM, so it was a little wet early. Plus it had poured down rain the previous night, so there were a few soggy spots. By the 6th hole, everything had pretty much dried up, and the fairways and greens were as beautiful as some that you see on tv.

It's east, off Utah HWY 89, about 2, maybe 3 miles south of Hatch, Utah. I have to tell you that I have never driven two miles on a dirt road to get to a golf course. The other unique thing was no counter person to take your money. There was sign that said put your money in a envelope, and sign your name on the front of it. Cart keys were by the front door if paying for a cart. Then just leave the envelope on the counter. The old merit system.

I walked the 9 holes, carrying my bag since I left my trolley at home. What I did forget about was the altitude. I am a 1700' ASL person. This course is at 7200' ASL. The first 5 holes run down hill, and were down wind the day I was there. I did not notice the down hill part until I made the turn for my uphill hike, and the last 4 holes. You'd think with the wind blowing straight into my face I would get some "ram air" (oxygen), but that was not the case. I found myself huffing, and puffing on the last 2 or 3 holes. The 18th hole had quite a up hill grade.

The course itself was fun to play. At each tee box there was a little sign that told what your tee shot distance should be. On par threes it simply said "HIT THE GREEN". Every par 4 & 5 fairway had patches of native shrubs, and grasses in the middle of the fairways. The idea being the owners had less fairway acreage to maintain. The greens were very good in that you could roll a straight putt, and the ball would roll straight. The day I was there they seemed to be a bit on the slow side. The price to walk 9 holes was $15, which seemed fine at the time. They also have carts if you want to ride for more money.

It's not fancy, but it is golf. If you are in the area, and have some time, I'd recommend you play this course just for the heck of it. I saw a bunch of wild life while on my trek. Also, if the weather is warm/hot, and you hit a ball into the native rough, you might be better off not to go looking for the ball. Apparently there is a critter that lives in the region called a "Great Basin Rattle Snake". A guy on horse back saw me looking for lost ball, rode over, and educated me.

Farther south on Utah HWY 89 where Utah SR 9 intersects HWY 89 (to Zion NP) there is another 9 hole golf course, that charges $10.00 to walk. The whole golf course is a one gigantic fairway. There might be some rough, but I never saw it. The place is in great shape, but it was pretty crowded when I was there, and balls were flying every where.

Mount Carmel Junction, Utah - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So if you are traveling HWY 89 in that area of Utah, give these courses a try. ;)
