First of all, Welcome!

Woods consist of the longer clubs in your bag, that hit the longest distances. These clubs are the 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 woods. The 1 wood is also known as the driver. Woods get their name, because back in the old days, they were made from wood. These days, they are made from metal, but the name "Wood" just stuck. When people say wood, these are the clubs they are referring too. A fairway wood is just another name for them. They can be hit from the tee box, or the fairway.

A hybrid is a wood style iron, and are intended for players who either; A.) Have trouble with their long irons, or, B.) Players looking to close a distance gap between their clubs. So if you have a 4 iron, but not a 3 iron, and only a 3 wood for a wood, and you can't find a 3 iron you like, then you may want to look for a 3 iron hybrid club replacement for the 3 iron. Hybrids look more like woods than irons, so that makes it easier to sweep them off the fairway, but they can still be hit like irons too. Useful for funky lies.

Basically, they are intended as a long iron replacement. There are lots of styles and lofts available for any need. I hope I helped on the matter.
