Prayers For A Golfer

Some of you who follow the Nationwide Tour may have heard of a golfer named Erik Compton. While not a big winner, Erik is unusual in that he was born with a congenital heart defect and had a transplant at the age of 12. I believe I am correct to say he is the only professional on any American tour to have had a heart transplant.

Recently, he had a heart attack while home in Miami, Florida and was put back on the transplant list.

Last night at 3 AM, Erik began surgery to receive his second new heart, at the expense of a 26 year old motorcycle accident victim.

I don't know Erik personally, but one of my golf buddies is such a close friend that the Compton family lets him in the CCU when only family members are supposed to be in there. Sort of by osmosis, I've become a fan of Erik's, currently for his struggle to survive, but hopefully in the future to see him return to playing golf.

Your prayers would be greatly appreciated...

Surgery went well and other than some minor bleeding, there have been no complications. They figure to keep Erik in ICU another 3-4 days before moving him into a private room where he will recover for some further period of time.

Erik text messaged my friend's brother yesterday to say they got him out of bed and walked around. Just by coincidence, it was 72 hours after surgery, plus they happened to take 72 steps. Erik figures the next step is 72 strokes and then 72 holes. You have to admire the kid's spirit!
