Tiger & Phil

What's your take on Tiger and Phil passing on the tour championship. Laziness or a tournament that no longer matters?

Personally, I think the tour champ. has become too much like the pro bowl of golf, just another paycheck. There is no cut and really no longer any prestige to the tournament. Maybe the Fedex cup will change that next year but for now the tour championship is just another tournament that no one cares about because the majors have all come and gone months ago.

My thoughts on this matter? Both should be fined $1 million dollars for not playing. The Tour works hard to keep Coke as a sponsor of this event and then two of the marquee golfers stick their noses up at the event? BS. Fine them.

I watched The Golf Channel the other night and they interviewed a young boy who was pretty sad because Tiger was not coming. Afterall people buy tickets well in advance for an event like that, knowing Woods will be there. Then he flips off the event because he needs to recharge his batteries? Give me a break, he just had 5 weeks off!

At least Phil announced right after the Ryder Cup that he would not play anymore this season. However I still feel he should be playing this event.

Ames is missing the event due to a back injury.

Woods will go to Japan and China, for huge appearence fees of course. He will play in his Target Event. Yet he needs this week to continue to recharge his batteries.

As I watched the conclusion of last weeks Chrysler Championship it was interesting to see Ernie Els hovering over a laptop to see if he had remained in the Top 30.
So it seems to me that this event is important to most of the Top 30. The Tour should have backed up the list 3 spots allowing the 31st, 32nd and 33rd money winners into the event.

The Super Rich ones just don't care.

The tour needs to do something to entice them to play and neither one need the money.

Even if they did play, I doubt they'd try all that hard. Better to leave the tournament open for people that actually want to play and win.

On top of all that, the tour has no right at all to tell Tiger what to do. He's done more for them than they could ever do for him.

I could care less about fake Phil

I don't buy fining them or even disapproving of them for not playing the tour champ. Because then it opens up the discussion of players no longer choosing the tournaments they play in. If the tour made them play what's to stop them from forcing them into events like the 84 lumber or the john deere just to boost ratings?

I was invited to play a junior tounament on thanksgiving weekend in Myrtle Beach, SC. I thought about it and decided i didn't have the time or desire to prepare for a tournament this late in the year and didn't want to spend thanksgiving in a hotel in Myrtle Beach. No big deal there will be other tournaments. Its a similar situatation to this one in that you have to want to play or else you should withdraw because you are only taking the spot of somoeone who wants to be there more than you do

i dont think i would turn down a chance to play that much golf and win that much money. its a bit arrogant really. there are millions of people in the world would would do almost anything for a chace to play in the tour champs.

Whats even more arrogant is if they played just for the money and not because they wanted to be there. Golf is a job for them and everyone takes time off from their job when they can get it. It shouldn't be about the money. I'm glad they aren't playing because it gives us a chance to watch someone else play good golf who got in because they withdrew and wants it more right now.

The tour championship has become just another event after the majors, its just another paycheck. It no longer has any prestige and is not a big-time event anymore just a free paycheck to whoever plays.

What the PGA needs to do is to set a schedule for these guys, events that they must play in, like every other major sport.

Either that, or set up 12-20 tournaments that earn points, and ONLY these tournaments earn you points for the Championship.

Letting these guys pick and choose is BS. It's bad enough they get paid astronomical amounts of money to GOLF, but on top of that, they have to listen to NOBODY? Weak.

I'd be all up for a 15 event 'season' in which all the players had to play in, or else you were deducted points from your standings...

Ghost has a good point, however not everyone makes the cut for each tournament. And one full PGA field tournament would be quite extensive; nevermind 15.

I think that it is disappointing that Phil and Tiger aren't playing in the Championship but it's obvious that Phil is on his way out of the spotlight anyway and has made it clear that family obligations and such are taking priority over winning money in tournaments.

I think the FedEx Cup next year will give players incentive to play more events because they won't be playing for money, but points. And points then lead to money at the end of the season. They should lower all the purses in the season events so the Tour Championship will be where all the money is - much like the Charles Schwab Cup for the Champions Tour (congrats Jay Haas.)

But I agree something has to be done. I will be anxiously awaiting both players return next season.
