Pebble Beach

Probably one of the more interesting events...

Regardless of the current corporate sponsorships, I'm at least glad to hear the tv commentators allude to the history of the events and give credit to the stars who originated them.

There was one interesting interview yesterday with Craig T. Nelson, the actor of "Coach" fame. His father was Bing Crosby's drummer for quite a while, but went home to Spokane to make a living through the great depression while Bing percevered to make a living in Hollywood. Nelson mentioned how they remained good friends all their lives.

It sort of makes me wonder if Craig T. Nelson wouldn't have been a host more dedicated to the memory of Bing Crosby.

Question

I'm new to golf and I was confused about what's the pro am? Also, how are the celebrities playing with the pro's? Are they all playing on the same course?

Yep - In some of the California tournaments that start the year, the format has the pros and amateurs, many being celebrities, playing together for more than just the 1 day pro-am before the 4 days of a normal tournament. They keep the team scores and the individual pro scores.

Most of the California pro-am style tournaments started many years ago as fun events for the host, whether Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Andy Williams or others, to entertain their friends.

Each of the tournaments is somehat different from the others, but in the case of the ATT, what used to be the Crosby Clambake, they have a larger group, so they use three courses. Poppy Hills is new in the rota with Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill. I've gone blank on the course that used be the third...

Basically what Dennis said. But the Amateurs play from closer tee boxes. Sometimes the "Team" won't make the cut but the Pro will, so a lot of amateurs will no be playing the last couple of days.

It is basically an invite only type of event for the amateurs. They don't have to qualify of anything. Sometimes the Pro will invite them or they get invited because they may make good ratings.

Its also a great way for CBS to push some of their shows. A few years ago it wasn't the Pebble Beach Pro AM it was the King of Queens and Ray Ramano show. It was terrible. They literally showed those two jokers the whole time. They followed Ray as he was stuck on a beach for like 20 minutes. I turned it off after that, I wanted to watch some good golf, not some hack who can't break 100.

Anyone else remember that?
