With 13-under 59, Watson-North team leads by three

Tom Watson and Andy North have been partners in victory before on the Champions Tour. This time, however, it means a lot more.

Watson and North teamed to birdie the first seven holes en route to a better-ball 13-under 59 on Friday for a three-shot lead after the first round of the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf tournament at The Club at Savannah Harbor.

"For a while there, we said, 'Let's birdie them all,'" North said. "That's sort of what you have to do. You make three pars in an event like this and eight teams go past you."

During the opening run of birdies, Watson sank a 25-foot putt at No. 3 and North chipped in at the sixth.

"You have to make a lot of birdies to win this thing," Watson said. "You'll probably have to shoot about 62 every day."

Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf returns to its roots as a team event

The Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf Legends Division will return to its roots this week, using a new format in the Legends Division for the first time -- an official team competition. The format will be two-man, better-ball, with the players on the winning team receiving a one-year exemption into all Champions Tour events with the exception of major championships.

The Raphael and Demaret Divisions will remain as they were previously, unofficial team events. The Raphael Division (for players 50 to 69) will remain a 36-hole, two-man better-ball event for unofficial money. The Demaret Division (players 70 and older) will also be a 36-hole better-ball competition and will play on Monday and Tuesday of tournament week.

Jay Haas won the Legends Division a year ago, taking his second consecutive title. He will be playing with Curtis Strange this week. Tom Watson and Andy North will not be defending their three consecutive Raphael Division titles this week as the duo is entered in the Legends Division. Butch Baird and Bobby Nichols are the Demaret Division defending champs.

Terrific teamwork helps Watson and North extend their dominance

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Behind the clubhouse at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa, there's a pathway laid with bricks. The winners' names from each year are engraved on these bricks in a semi-circle around the American flag.
