Fort Smith Classic presented by Stephens, Inc.

FORT SMITH, Ark. -- The Nationwide Tour reaches the one-third point of the season this week at Hardscrabble Country Club, host venue for the 11th Fort Smith Classic presented by Stephens, Inc. Thus far in 2008 the Nationwide Tour has seen a particularly strong international influence. Australians made up five of the first eight winners, with Canada adding a title of its own last week. Not one American is in the top five on the current money list.

Three share first-round lead at Fort Smith Classic

FORT SMITH, Ark. -- Tommy Gainey and Matt Weibring aren't complaining after shooting 6-under-par 64s Thursday in the opening round of the Fort Smith Classic. Kris Cox was admittedly surprised to post his best round of the year, a 64 as well.

Gainey and Weibring both admit they left a few shots on the Hardscrabble Country Club course, while Cox made the most of his chances. Despite the missed putts, failed opportunities and newfound confidence, the trio share first-day lead in the $550,000 event, the 10th stop on the 2008 Nationwide Tour schedule.

Gainey, Weibring and Cox lead by two over Cameron Percy, David Lutterus, Jason Dufner, Justin Hicks, Brian Stuard and Michael Boyd. Ten others are three shots back, including 2006 champion Darron Stiles, former Arkansas Razorback Rich Morris and Monday qualifier Ty Tryon.

Former champ and Monday qualifier share halfway lead

FORT SMITH, Ark. -- For Darron Stiles, the combination of a good year and a comfortable golf course might make a nearly unbeatable combination. Stiles fired a 7-under-par 63 in the second round of the Fort Smith Classic and moved to a familiar place -- the top of the leaderboard.

Texan Knost crosses border to win Fort Smith Classic

FORT SMITH, Ark. -- Colt Knost hopes he can put the questions to rest. When Knost turned pro last fall, he turned down invitations to this year's Masters, U.S. Open and British Opens and caught a lot of flak from the skeptics about his decision to leave the amateur ranks.

The reigning U.S. Amateur champion fired a 5-under-par 65 Sunday and erased a six-stroke deficit to win the Fort Smith Classic, his first victory as a professional.

Knost bogeyed his final hole at Hardscrabble County Club to finish at 12-under-par 268 and then had to wait more than an hour to see if anyone would catch or pass him. Darron Stiles, who was in the last twosome, was the leading candidate to challenge Knost
