Grieving Nick Dougherty bids for Italian Open

Nick Dougherty today launches an llth-hour bid for the Italian Open victory that narrowly eluded him last year, only 48 hours after his mother's funeral following a heart attack.

The 25-year-old, who finished a stroke behind 2007 Italian Champion Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano after a second-round 64, had planned to tee off in the conflicting Players Championship before being forced to withdraw while lying 10th in America's Heritage event when his mother, Ennis, was taken ill.

"I would have gone to Sawgrass even though my mum didn't want me to - she was convinced I was going to win this time in Italy," he explained.

Daly trails McGowan and Ruiz in Italian Open

John Daly put his off-course troubles behind him with an opening 67 in the Italian Open at Castello di Tolcinasco yesterday, only to find himself upstaged by a little known Paraguayan and a batch of British golfing lions.

The heavyweight American, who missed the cut in last week's Spanish Open despite a last nine holes of 32, birdied four of the last five holes here to go out in 32.

But he trails three behind leaders Marco Ruiz and former English Amateur Champion Ross McGowan, with Walker Cup stars Marc Warren, of Scotland, and England's Mark Foster on 65 with South African Hennie Otto.

Robert Karlsson goes low at Italian Open

Robert Karlsson of Sweden shot a course-record 11-under 61 in Milan, Italy, to take the lead after the second round of the European PGA’s Italian Open.

Karlsson had two eagles and eight birdies to go with one bogey to finish the round at 15-under 129. Hennie Otto and Mark Foster were 2 strokes back after each shooting 66.

John Daly, trying to break into the European tour, followed up Thursday’s 67 with a 73 to sit 11 strokes back.

Tennis-Fatigued Henin to skip Italian Open

World number one Justine Henin has pulled out of next week's Italian Open because of fatigue, the WTA said on Friday.

Henin, a four-times French Open winner, has struggled for form all year and suffered a surprise defeat to Dinara Safina in the third round of the German Open on Thursday.

The WTA said the Belgian, who was defeated in the 2002 Italian Open final by Serena Williams, will be fined $20,000 for the no-show.

Argentine Gisela Dulko will take her place in the Rome tournament, which starts on Monday, organizers said on the official Web site (Internazionali BNL d'Italia - Official Site). (Writing by Paul Virgo; editing by Miles Evans)

Otto goes four clear at Italian Open

South African Hennie Otto has given himself an excellent chance of winning his first European Tour title as he takes a four-shot lead into the final round of the Italian Open in Milan

A superb third round 63 lifted the 31-year-old from two behind at halfway to a commanding 22-under-par, one off the record in relation to par after three rounds for a European Tour event.

His nearest challengers are Ryder Cup star Robert Karlsson of Sweden, his compatriot Christian Nilsson and Spain's Albvaro Velasco.

Karlsson, who shot a stunning course record 61 on the low-scoring Castello di Tolcinasco lay-out, slipped to a 69 in the third round despite starting with an eagle,

After four birdies and a bogey in his first five holes, Otto then had four more around the turn before finishing with three more -- the last of them from 25 feet -- for an inward 30.

Runner-up for Oliver Wilson at the Italian Open

England's Oliver Wilson had to settle for second place - the sixth time he has finished as a tournament runner-up - in the Italian Open at Castello di Tolcinasco yesterday. He was one stroke adrift of South African Hennie Otto, who recorded his first European Tour win.

Wilson, 27, a member of the winning Walker Cup side of 2003, shot an excellent 64, the best round of the day, with four of his eight birdies coming at successive holes from the 11th.

But Otto, who had squandered a five-shot lead to lose out in a play-off in the Madeira Open in March, held on grimly after seeing his four-stroke advantage after three rounds disappear when he took six at the 12th. A round of 69 eventually secured him a winning total of 263, 25 under par.
