Has anyone seen the cover on an issue in Golf World about Phil quoting, "I am such an idiot!" What do you think about this?

That's just Phil being Phil. A lot of good athletes are really hard on themselves, but the truly great ones use it as fuel to get better. If Phil had confidence in his driver and thought it would give him the best chance to win the tournament, so be it.
