Agreed - the off center cores would still effect the spin of the ball. But, on the ball checker there is a provision to mark across a second axis to help form a + sign. If this were done on all balls, you would be lining up the off center core to roll up over itself. Think of it like an out of round wheel...

At least that is how I imagine it would work but maybe I need to do more thinking on it.

I might just have to get one and do some testing myself.

(I'm a geek for this kind of stuff! Did I mention I made my own makeshift stimpmeter just so I could rate the carpet at my house??)

If it has the ability to make a plus, as you say, I am almost 100% confident that the second line will be the best line to use if you want it to roll straight. That second line would essentially be the same as the one represented in my 2nd illustration.

I did some thinking about it, and once you get the fist line laid down correctly, ANY line perpendicualr to it would give you the same good (straight for putting) result. It just HAS to be perpendicular otherwise it would veer left or right.

Like you said, the out of center core would just roll up over itself.

I wonder how much 2 piece balls are off compared to 3 piece? I would think 2 piece balls would have less of an issue.

Cheers,
-Troy

Tonight - I'll take a pre marked ball and add in the second axis to it (I've only been marking the vertical or rolling line so far) and then I can post up more pictures...

And for sure - if you add more parts to anything you increase the risk for out of tolerance products just due to manufacturing variations. Once spring gets here I will start some roll testing on differnt brands of golf balls for fun.

Just got the one myself

Hey there,

I just got one for Christmas, and the box said something interesting on it. It said it put the heavy parts of the ball along the equator. If this is indeed the case, then the first line drawn on the ball would be the line to use.

Anyway, I can't wait to hear what your tests reveal. Does their product work as stated? I'll try running some tests of my own when I get the chance in the spring and let you know my results too.

Cheers,
-TMC

Well, I did some more testing with my "Check-N-Go" machine today and below is a whole lot more pictures of the fun I had.

First: I used a ball that I had marked previously when I first got the device to verify the repeatability.

Second: I took two shots trying to capture the logo while the ball was spinning for verification - both times, the line is in the same spot as when I first marked it

Here you can see the logo - hopefully dispelling any thoughts of trickery

From those pictures, it looks like the machine still operates as intended.

Also, with the warmer weather in Michigan I did try putting a few on the practice retangle / putting green (@ my local driving range) and was impressed with the rolling properties of the ball

And from there....

I've since gone ahead and marked all of the balls in my golf bag for the upcoming spring

In that last picture - I tried to show the dot you make to mark the horizontal axis of the ball. To mark the other side, you have to let the ball spin down and then flip it over, spin it back up and then mark...

I use the check and go all the time and have for about 3 years. As good as golf balls are these days they a still mass produced, quality control is probably pretty good also. But we can't expect the every ball made is perfectly balanced. Therefore we use the check and go to find the center a gravity. I can say that using the check and go has improved on how I roll the ball, when it rolls true there is no wobble in the line. That being said I miss putts because of my stroke not because of the ball I'm using.

I've been looking at your pictures and the line on your ball should be thin, it looks like maybe your pushing too hard. I found that if I took a drill bit the size of the hole where you insert the pen and reamed it out some,(no power tools just by hand) that the pen fits better and I didn't have to push hard, to get a nice clean line. It only takes a light touch of the pen, but make sure you give at least 15 to 20 seconds for the rpm to be at its peak. After the ball is marked I use a plastic ball marker(it snaps onto the ball) to put a thicker line on the ball. I hope this helps.
