Changing Played Ball on Hole

Today I played my first nine holes on a real course. I felt surprisingly good on my short-mid range game. Can a player tee off with one ball and switch it out on later shots? I teed off with cheaper balls because I didn't mind losing them as much, but I got a much better feel on my pitching wedge shots and 9 iron shots using a Callaway HX-Hot that I found. Was this within the rules? Also, how is it possible to get a better feel with one ball over another? I was teeing off with a Top Flight XL-Straight.

Sorry for a multi question post, I am a newcomer with golf fever.

If you're just playing for fun, I don't see a problem with it. But many tournaments and other organized golf events will employ a "one-ball" rule. Meaning you use the same ball throughout the hole, no switching. You can switch balls on the tee box though, just not while it is in play.

I know that some balls will feel better than others, but I'm not sure design-wise why, so I'll leave your second question to someone more knowledgable.

Actually the Rules of golf prohibit this, unless the original ball is unfit for play... But I understand where you are coming from, and f you were playing a round of golf with me I wouldn't care. As others said, in tournys etc.... its a no-no.

BTW, why not get a USGA rule book, or join and get one... I find some of the rules a real hoot!

Thanks guys, I figured it wasn't allowed. I just play for fun though and my friends don't really mind. We stretch the rules a good bit, haha. I hope to get good enough to try out for school this year though.

I think we have answered the question if it does. And for this golfer it does, it gives him confidence in his game and plus they help the feel of the shot. I do think the right ball does everything for some people and others it doesn't even matter, matter which ball they use. Well welcome to the game and the forum.

As far as balls go, some balls are much harder and have a higher compression ratios, their meant for us amateurs with slower swing speeds. They'll give maximum yardage with the driver, but they have poor holding capability around a green (hard to put back spin on the ball). Some balls have a lower compression ratio and a softer cover, makes it much easier to put backspin on the ball, for holding the greens, usually used by experienced golfers with higher swing speeds. Hope this helps

It's a no no, you should get used to using one ball, some time down the road it may cost you.
