Nike Karma

The temperature in N.C. is very up and down at the moment, last weekend was 70°+ and my favorite ball, Taylormade TP/Black, was working very well. This weekend is a whole new "ball" game, mid 30° weather and the ball feels like rock and i'm losing yardage on every club.
So after my game yesterday I paid a visit to my local Golf Galaxy store to get my new driver fitted with the correct size grip. While I was there I picked up a dozen Nike Karma balls. I've always been a fan of Nike balls and played most of the summer with the Distance/soft, then i changed to the Juice. Anyway, the new Karma are only 50 compression and favor slower swing speeds, My swing speed is 100mph but with the colder conditions I thought i'd give them a try.

After only 1 hole I was happy with my new purchase, these balls feel really soft and just spring off the club face. Yardage was also great, right on par with my regular taylormade ball in warmer weather. Only thing i didn't like about the ball was it's stopping power on the greens, I hit a few good approaches but the ball hopped forward and rolled. This may have been because of the weather today, wet and windy! Another plus for this ball was the lack of spin off the driver, I hit 2 poor drives (fade/slice) and got away with just landing in the rough, whereas I'm sure the Taylormade and most other top quality balls would have put me O/B or in the trees.

If i was to mark this ball out of 10 this is how i would rate it:

Feel = 10/10
Distance = 9/10
Spin/Control = 5/10
Off the driver = 9/10
Putter = 9/10
Price = 8/10 ($20 per dozen)
Overall = 8/10 for cold weather use or slower swing speeds

If you play in 40° or lower temperatures and your looking for a winter ball, then give these a try. They will surprise you.

Chief.

As someone who plays a lot of golf in 35 F and up temperatures I have been preaching the use of 50 compression balls on this site.

Finally someone listened!

Glad to hear those balls worked out well for you.

Wilson 50/50's are also worth a look for balls in this category but living where I live.....this isn't really a concern. I did buy a pack of Karmas for my father but he has yet to put them in play yet....as he's not done with 50/50's I got him a month back.

I was playing with two other guys today, who i met on the 2nd hole. I gave one of them a Karma to try and he in return gave me a Wilson Zip. I asked him what compression it was and he said "Zip, zero". I only had the opportunity to make 1 hit with it because the damn thing went so far i lost it in the ditch. It's 195 yards to the hazard and i hit a 5 iron, which even in summer I only hit my 5 iron 185 max!. The guy who gave me the ball said he is hitting as far if not better as he was in the summer with this ball
After posting this i'm going to search the internet and read up on this Wilson Zip, I may buy a sleeve and i'll post back with a review.

Thanks Golfbum.

I also found this Wilson Zip Review It seems other players like them too. I can't find them on the ****'s or Golf Galaxy sites, which have stores near me, so i guess i'll have to order some online.

I have not seen those balls at my local golf retailer but I will ask about them tomorrow when I am there. I have played the Wilson 50 and it is a decent ball for the money you pay for them.

If you find some and try them be sure to give us your opinion on them. I know I will be interested.

I know my swing speed and I know what I want in a ball.

Well i found another Wilson zip and played a whole round with it. The weather was 45 degrees and damp/foggy. The first thing i noticed about this ball was how soft it feels off the irons, when i say "soft" it's almost like hitting a plastic practice ball in the garden. The trajectory is nice and high but without ballooning and I didn't have any problems stopping it on the greens. The only trouble i had with these balls was off the driver, i have a swing speed of 100mph and a Burner driver and I tend to push my drives if I let off a bit, so I gave it my normal swing which ended up falling a bit short on yardage. Maybe colder weather would help in the driving department as for all the other clubs in my bag, the yardage was back up to my summer distances.

In my honest opinion I like the Wilson zip and intend buying a sleeve for the sub 40 degree rounds and if the driver thing continues then i'll try my R5 driver instead.

P.S. I got the Nike Karma ball to back up on a green, something i've only ever done with a ProV and the TM tp blacks. Anyway the nike is in my bag for the 40-60 degree weather.
