The 18-hole "Monroe" course at the Monroe Country Club facility in Monroe, North Carolina features 6,759 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72 . The course rating is 71.8 and it has a slope rating of 118 on Bermuda grass. Designed by Tom Jackson/Donald J. Ross, ASGCA, the Monroe golf course opened in 1936.
That's the basic run down from the Golf Link. This is my local municipal and I feel really lucky to have it. It's very apparent that
Donald Ross had a real sense of humor when designing golf courses. Putt just a few of his greens and you'll see what I mean. The course has the character of a mature course, which is something I very much enjoy. It's situated in a very hilly part of town and the mature oaks, pines and cedars make a very picturesque backdrop to play against. The course is bermuda and very well maintained for a municipal course. The small pro shop is well stocked, the staff is very friendly. The small grill is clean, reasonably priced and turns out a very tasty version of the typical muni fare; burgers, dogs and fries. Weekday rates are $18 to walk or $27 to ride with a $5 increase on weekends, a real bargin in my book for the quality of the course. Long story short, if you're in south central North Carolina, you might wanna check out our little jewel of a course here in Monroe. Once the fairways green back up and the trees get their leaves in a couple of months, I'll take some pictures and do an updated review with more descriptions of the holes themselves.
