Arizona Grand or Phantom Horse in Phoenix

My buddies and I are going on our annual golf trip to Phoenix in a few weeks and our travel agent recommended Arizona Grand as a good first course for my group. I haven't been able to find much about the course so I was looking for some insight from anyone who has played it in the past year or so. Are the greens in good shape typically, fairways decent, yardages accurate...that sort of thing.

I appreciate any input.

Surtees will become famous soon enough
not sure about the course but if you go there it would be great if you'd give us a short review of the course. Welcome by the way

We played the course on Feb 27, 2009. I start with that because I hate reading reviews of a course and not knowing the time of year it was played.

The greens were in excellent shape although a bit slow, putts from 5-6 feet had to be given a decent rap...not clubbed but hit firmly. The tee boxes and fairways were also in excellent shape. The bunkers, while well maintained, were totally opposite of the practice area bunkers. Practice was firm and perfect, course was soft and fluffy (plugged lie heaven...firsthand experience here). The driving range was below average but if you go there with the idea of just swing to get loose you'll be fine. The putting/chipping green was a bit quicker than the course which drives me crazy. Just roll short putts and don't worry about trying to attain speed knowledge.

As for the course, don't hit driver off #1 if you carry the ball more than 240 and like to hit from the fairway. Plenty of room out there though if you don't always hit it where you are looking. Approach shot plays 15 yards shorter than the yardage indicated. You can see the downhill from the next tee box. #'s 2-8 are straight forward and easy to see. #9 says 314 on GPS when it is 377 on the card. I know GPS is LOS and card is measured down the middle of the fairway but didn't think is was 63 yds worth of dogleg. Hit driver just left of aiming stick and you are fine, lot more room out there than you can see from the tee box.

The back nine is all target/desert golf. GPS was not helpful at all off the tee but I was hitting the ball well so I didn't mind too much. Play to the aiming/150 sticks as much as possible, don't get greedy. I got greedy on one hole and hit 3-wood thru a dogleg and into the cacti (made double). Lesson learned. The GPS did seem to sync up once we got into the fairway. #13 (538 par 5) approach shot played 2 clubs uphill. #16 plays about 1 club shorter off the tee so if you're gonna lay up, don't try to cozy it next to the bunkers or you will be in em (greedy again on my part). #18 is a big downhill par 3 which played 2 clubs less for my group.

That's about it for Arizona Grand. I would go play it again given the opportunity. Good place to start our 72 hole golf/drinking binge.

Feel free to contact me if you want/need to know more about the course. I have an uncanny memory of golf courses.

BTW - I am a 4 handicapper so not great but good enough to know if yardages are accurate and greens\bunkers are consistent.
