i live near Chelmsford. I went to 3 Rivers once, but it was for a Christmas do, didn't see the golf course!

Welcome Jon! There's nothing to decide. Grab some clubs, get some lessons, get on the course and have a ball! This game will give you heartache, but it also will give you joy, friends and a sense of accomplishment far beyond a lot of other things you might ever do. It's far and away the greatest game in the world.
