Hello, Grip question.

Hello everyone,

Im not just new to this forum, I am new to golf.

I've recently been to my first driving range, and hit a golf ball for the first time.

I read up on the basics and had a friend explain some stuff to me, so I got used to a grip and stance that felt reasonably comfortable to me and started swinging.

He was surprised to see my balls were going almost dead straight, I wasnt aiming at anything, just down the range. But I have a problem, I have a huge blister on my right thumb, Im told my grip is too tight, but I don't know, I wasnt focusing on gripping the club or hitting the golf ball, just being comfortable.

I had my right pinky locked with my left index, but i had my pinky tucked under my index, and my left thumb under my right, both pointing straight down the shaft.

It felt comfortable, I could bend my elbows without moving my wrists, and i hit the ball almost straight, but I got a blister from it.

Is this normal? or am I doing something I shouldnt be?

Any help would be appreciated, thankyou

Its definitely a grip problem, your strangling the club. Also might invest in a glove till you get the problem sorted out, or your going to end up changing your swing to protect the blister.

If im strangling the club, does that mean Im holding it wrong? or just too tight?

Too Tight, on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 loose/10 strangle)a golfer should have a grip rated between 3 and 6. Try consciously reducing how hard your griping your club, I think you'll be surprised how a lighter grip will give just as good if not better performance then what your using now. The only time you should be 7/8/9 would be if your swinging through long wet grass.
