Post New to everything!!!

Name: Glenn
Birthday: June 4, 1967
What country you live in: USA
How old you are: 39
Your handicap: What is that?
Favorite golf course: Don't know yet.
Your local course: Not sure.
Any Special Qualities (Good at ...): I can make a coin dissapear.
Did you join because a registered member told you too (If so who?...): NO

So I'm sitting there watching my 6 year old son hit balls for his 3rd lesson in golf. I decide, let me try... and I hit a couple of balls and I'm hooked.

A week later I take a lesson on the putting green and I rush to Costo to purchase the Jack Nicklaus Signature Series Golf Set for $249.

Am I crazy? Maybe. All I know now though is I can't stop thinking about putting or hitting the ball more than 75 yards!

So here I am, trying to keep up with my son and his new sport, and I have blisters on my hand, a new golf bag with empty pockets, and I have no idea what I'm doing.

What goes in the golf bag? What's the difference between an 5-iron and a 9-iron except it's easier to hit with a 9... what is a hybrid and when do you use it? Why the difference in golf balls and why are there so many brands?

I'm addicted. And I haven't even been on a course in my entire life. Now I know what my friends are talking about and without warnings they tell me I'll love it once I try. Well... they were right.

Guess I should have read this one before answering the other one. Welcome to the board Glen, your hooked now my friend. Well what goes in the bag, things like extra balls, tees, pencils, rain coats, bug repellant, sun screen, gloves for starters. I suggest you get the club pro to explain the difference between a 5 ,9 and hyrbrid irons, and a couple of lessons before you develope all kinds of bad habits would really be beneficial. As far as golf balls are concerned well everybody wants to make a buck, as for you just getting started I suggest you look for those specials you can pick up at Wal-Mart, your going to lose a car load of them so might as well use the inexpensive ones. Again welcome to the board, if you got questions just post em and someone will fix you up...

Hello Glenn,

Nice to know you're hooked onto Golf :-)

All of us here are too, and we hope you'll become a part of this community.

There are so many things that you can do to learn the gentleman's game :-) so to speak.

You can buy a nice comprehensive book, like Everything About Golf, Idiot's Guide to Golf, as a reference book for understanding the game.

You can also look for a nice Golf Pro or coach who can really teach you the science behind the game. A good player ( maybe your friend, family member can teach you, but its Best you invest onto something that you are hooked into. )

The $64 question is, what is your goal?

A)Do you plan to just become a weekend golfer?
B)Do you plan to become a Good Amateur golfer?

If your answer is A, then a few rounds of session with your Pro is okay, i guess.
But if you want to be the best or become a Good golfer, then invest on spending money on hiring a good coach.

A Golf Pro ( coach ) should be someone who can impart the technology, teach you the basic fundamental and give you drills to work at home, so that when you go back to the Golf Practice range, you are fundamentally sound.
Playing Golf is like learning how to drive a car, the more you spend time practicing, the more you will become better.
However, the difference is between driving a car and driving a golf club is, .... In Golf, as a beginner, we tend to have some bad habits, and this habits should be corrected.

If left alone, this bad habits will lead to frustrations. Becoz your ball can't fly, and you may get jealous at your son or at your neighbor, friends, business friends, when you see their ball fly up, Up and Away.

The bad habits of Golf can easily be spotted by your Golf Pro, this can be from LookUps, shanking, improper posture, wrong grip and Over excitement.

You must be patient my friend with Golf. The more you do, and the more you Trust your Pro, the more you will be a better Golf Player.

just my 5 cent worth of idea amigo :-)
oh yeah, don't buy new set of Golf Equipment.
In my country, there's a saying that goes like this...

Īts not the Arrow, but the Indian who uses the Arrow... :-)
In short, even if you have the Best Equipment on hand, but if you are not fundamentally sound, you still can't hit the ball well, Just like an Indian who can't bullseye the marker or the prey :-)

hope your not offended with my last statement. this is just a fact

Thank you for your response. THat is great information. To answer your question, I want to be "B". My plan is to become a good amateur golfer. I hope to catch up to my friends who have been playing for a long time now but I just didn't join them.

I hired a Pro at the local golf club and have taken one lesson on the putting green.

LOL My cousin said the same thing. He loved golf and was on the dark side for five years and quit... That was four years ago and then he heard I was on the dark side and now wants to buy a new set of clubs.
